Happy St David's Day! Wales Celebrates Its National Day With Leeks Daffodils And Dragons

Happy St David's Day!

Happy St David's Day! Welsh people around the world are celebrating the nation's special day on 1 March, which also coincides with the first day of spring.

Dewi Sant, or Saint David is said to have died on 1 March in 589, after establishing a monastic community in Pembrokeshire, the same place where David Cathedral stands today.

The site became an important Christian shrine, and St David became a national figurehead throughout the centuries, as the Welsh faced up to Norman invasion, and migrated to other parts of the globe.

Welsh soldiers in Afghanistan celebrated St David's Day in the traditional way, by munching through whole raw leeks, the Wales Online reported.

The Prince of Wales, colonel in chief of the Welsh Guards, presented ceremonial leeks to the officers in their London barracks, whilst wearing full service dress.

Part of a St. David's day parade, the troops are soon to be sent to Afghanistan, reports the BBC.

Last night David Cameron bowed down to Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page, as he declared the programme to be the "finest sitcom of the last five years".

However, some of those celebrating St David's Day were less keen on Cameron, if this picture is anything to go by:

Cameron also met Wales rugby captain Sam Warburton before sharing a laugh with TV presenter Steve Jones. The Welsh rugby union has tweeted a picture on 1 March to help 'you celebrate St David's Day.'

Happy St David's Day

As part of St David's day celebrations, people have been dressing in Welsh national dress, brandishing daffodils and sharing leek-filled recipes on social media site Twitter.

Michael Owen, named in the Independent as one of the 'Titans Of The Twittersphere' posted a picture of his daughter looking adorable in a tall black chimney hat, and shawl, with a giant daffodil pinned to her top.

Even Google Doodle celebrated, with a picture of a red Welsh dragon, sniffing a daffodil, on a bed of the spring flowers.

Mitt Romney, US Presidential hopeful will be celebrating St David's Day by eating Welsh cakes with his family, reports the BBC. Both he and his wife boast Welsh ancestry, which the family says can be traced back to the Bridgend town of Maesteg.

Others posted pictures on Twitter in a more robust celebration of their country's national flower. Scroll down further for a Wales' homage to Hollywood, after Twitterati began to post under the hashtag #welshfilmclub (think Sheepless in Seattle)
