Guitarist Johnny Marr has promised to re-form The Smiths if the coalition government quits office.
Speaking to music magazine NME, Marr said he and frontman Morrissey had no plans make a comeback.
But he added: "Maybe if the government stepped down. If this government stepped down, I'll reform the band. How's that? That's a fair trade, isn't it?
"I think the country would be better off, don't you? I'll do it if the coalition steps down," he said.
David Cameron has claimed to be a fan of the band, although the promise of one more live performance may not be quite enough to persuade him to dissolve the government.
Marr has previously expressed his horror that the Conservative prime minister is one of his followers, saying he "forbids" him from saying he liked The Smiths.
Cameron has also been gently mocked in the Commons for the spat between him and the band with Labour MP Kerry McCarthy asking him in December whether students, unhappy with tuition fee rises, would greet him with a rendition of Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now.
The prime minister conceded: "If I turned up I probably wouldn't get This Charming Man."
