A laser light display brought a vibrant rainbow to the night skies of North Tyneside, to mark the 2012 Cultural Olympiad celebrations in the north east.
Global Rainbow is a touring light installation by US artist Yvette Mattern. The Cultural Olympiad in the north east brings the piece to the UK for the first time.
The display is a live performer's dream. Made up of seven parallel beams of high specification laser light, each beam represents the spectrum of the rainbow.
Global Rainbow looks magnificent shooting across Tyneside, but it's designed to work particularly well in densely populated areas.
It has shone across New York and Berlin, where Mattern hopes to "encompass geographical and social diversity in its reach and symbolise hope", according to her blog.
On 8 March 2012, International Women’s Day, the rainbow is being projected over Preston for four nights.
From 14 March 2012, it will beam from Scrabo Tower until 17 March, St Patrick's day. It will then move on to Newtownards, the eastern shore of Strangford Lough and the Ards Peninsula.
Global Rainbow first shone across New York City on 19 January 2009, Martin Luther King Junior Day.
