Boxing Clever: Weekend TV Highlights - Hoarder, Rihanna, Girl Bands, Disco... And Trucks

Boxing Clever: TV For The Weekend

Friday

The Joy Of Disco - BBC4, 9pm

It's not all glitterballs and flares - this BBC4 documentary explores the birth of disco in the black and, particularly, gay scenes of urban America in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Who knew pop music had such an influence on social change? It might not match a good night on the dancefloor, but it will show how the tradition for a boogie began.

Eddie Stobart: Trucks and Trailers - Channel 5, 8pm

An eight part series about trucks doesn't sound that enticing, but these types of docs can often become guilty pleasures. Remember the documentary about microlight planes - The Real Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines? That was uplifting stuff, and the first episode of Eddie Stobart promises to give us an equally entertaining insight into what it's like to drive a lorry in congested London, while the firm organises its first-ever 'trucking festival'.

Saturday

Obsessive Compulsive Hoarder - 7.15pm, C4

This is a repeat, but jaw-droppingly necessary viewing. In this admirably understated documentary - where the facts are allowed to speak for themselves without any oohing and aahing nonsense from an overpaid presenter - we meet Richard Wallace, who has been busy collecting... stuff for 30 years. So much stuff that it now takes him over half an hour from his one remaining chair to the front door. With no room to bathe or cook, even Richard himself admits, "it's getting a bit silly." Heart-warming evidence that Britain does indeed boast some of the most unusual people within the earth's atmosphere.

The Jonathan Ross Show - 9.20pm, ITV1

As usual, the host manages to balance high-quality British talents with the vra-vra-voom factor of a blingtastic US visitor to these shores. This week sees Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton keeping the home fires burning - with forthcoming roles on the West End stage of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. Lionel Richie rocks up with a new album, but even he won't have the biggest dressing room. That will surely be the fiefdom of one Rihanna, who has already been snapped stroking Wossy's hair. Dishing includes why she's had to turn off the music of her British counterpart Adele, and what she's looking for in an ideal man.

Sunday

War Horse: The Real Story - 8pm, C4

For those whose visit to the cinema and/or theatre recently to see War Horse piqued an interest into the equine contribution of horses to the battle field, here's the full real-life story, in all its gruesomeness. It's heartbreaking viewing at times, with tales of battles, weapons and mind-boggling statistics. There are a few inspirational tales along the way, but all in all, a documentary that leaves you pining for the Hollywood treatment, and good fortune, of Joey and his owner.

I'm In A Girl Group - 9.20pm, BBC2

For every girl who's ever sung, loudly and unabashed into her hairbrush, this is a sweet, and revealing, look behind the scenes of some of the world's most successful girl bands. Lots of nostalgia trips in this one - redolent of never-ending summers, the advent of mobile phones, boys who don't call back, and it not mattering because your mates want to go shopping. And lots of contributors to take us inside the dream - from the Supremes and Ronettes of Motown, right up to Spicey Girl Power, and the evolving fortunes of the Sugababes.
