Older Ravers Hit Magaluf, Ayia Napa And Other Clubbing Hotspots

Is Your Granny Going Raving In Magaluf This Summer?

Older holidaymakers are turning into silver shufflers by heading for clubbing spots abroad, a survey has revealed.

Tourists aged over 55 are also not adverse to drinking and having holiday romances overseas, the poll by Gnu Insurance found.

But these older holidaymakers tend to stick to wine and beer compared with younger tourists who go for sangria, vodka and cocktails.

Based on responses from more than 2,000 people, the survey showed that 20% of over-55s had danced with strangers abroad and nearly 10% had danced on the table.

The top five club scene destinations picked by over-55s were Lanzarote, Ibiza, Rio de Janeiro, Magaluf in Spain and Ayia Napa in Cyprus.

As many as 15% of over-55s had had a holiday romance abroad, 14% had been stopped by police and 2% had stripped off while away.

Also, 24% of over-55s were going on holiday to meet new people and 31% were taking breaks to do something adventurous.

While 38% of 18 to 24-year-olds wanted to spend time with their family on holiday, only 36% of over-55s did.

A total of 40% of over-55s preferred wine and 33% went for beer when they were on foreign trips.

Gnu Insurance general manager Paul Thilo said: "Our research demonstrates that older generations are remaining young at heart and choosing holidays that will be fun and involve the kind of activities that traditionally have been seen as the preserve of the young."
