Gemma Barker, Girl Who Dressed As Boy To Seduce Underage Friends, Jailed

Fraud

A teenager who disguised herself as a boy to date her own female friends, some of whom were underage, was jailed for 30 months on Monday.

Gemma Barker, 20, admitted fraud and sexual assault after she turned herself into a series of different boys and seduced her friends. Barker, who was 19 at the time, even created separate Facebook accounts for each identity, Guildford Crown Court heard.

According to Chetna Patel, defending, the teen changed her identity to "become the boy" her friends wanted.

During the hearing, Patel referred to probation and psychological reports which found she suffers from autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD.

"Miss Barker struggles to understand the motives and the intentions of others," she said, telling the court that her client wanted to become "the perfect boy" for each of the victims.

Barker had committed repeated sexual assaults - up to 20 on one girl, by pretending to be a boy, and possibly half that number on the other girl, using two more male disguises.

Her 15 and 16-year-old friends were fooled by Barker's deception and started relationships with her, which involved "kissing, cuddling and groping".

When one of Barker's victims became suspicious, she reported the defendant to the police who eventually discovered the truth. Whilst being investigated, Barker even claimed to have been assaulted by one of her fictional characters, "Luke Jones".

Barker, of Staines, Middlesex, was told by Judge Peter Moss at the court that she would be in custody for the first half of the term and serve the remainder on licence.

He said: "I have concluded that these offences are so serious that only a custodial sentence is appropriate."

Moss then told Barker: "Nothing that you have ever said to any expert or the police sheds any light on, or provides any understanding of, your motivation for these offences.

"Nor have I nor anyone else seen any flicker of remorse for what you have done."

The judge added Barker's guilty pleas were "a complete reversal of the position you had held up until then", having previously used "persistent lies and denials".

Barker showed no emotion as she left the dock to start her sentence, to be served at least initially in a young offenders' institution.

She had previously admitted two counts of sexual assault and one of fraud. The offences took place between November 23 2009 and May 10 2010.

As strange as this case is I fail to see what law she has brocken. She dressed up as a person of a diferent sex, prosumably this they say is fraud. Then is every transvestite guilty also guilty of fraud. she had a number of sessions of kissing and petting with two girls who were obviesly consenting at the time. She deceived them as to her identity or sexual oriantation. Is it a crime to lie about yourself to someone in order to have a relationship with them. If so how meny of us would be guilty. As for dressing as a boy and pretending to be a boy actions I cant fully comprehend. It would not be any differant to the men who dress up as women and pretend to be women having simular relations with other men who beleive them to be women. If she deserves to be jailed so do all these transvetites also deserve to be in jail.

British legal system once again getting it very wrong. Autism compounded by ADHD suggests health care needed not prison. Mad!

Autism compounded by ADHD could also suggest a misdiagnosis by professionals who have very little knowledge or understanding of female sexual offending behaviour. Very little is know about female sexual offending and for professionals to falsely diagnose all females who commit sexual assaults as being "mentally ill" is also very wrong.

Professionals haven't 'falsely diagnose'd' all females', they have diagnosed one in this case. One could and should assume that these professionals employed by the court for this case were only commenting on the behaviour of one person i.e. the court was trying Gemma Barker and not all females committing sexual assaults.

So we release Abu Qatada, one of the most dangerous terrorists in the world, back to his family, to live a comfortable life on our money, and replace him in prison with a girl who clearly needs psychiatric help.

Words fail me !

Although what she did was reprehensible by normal standards, it sounds as though she was seeking acceptance by trying to be what each of the young girls wanted--the "perfect" boyfriend. Autism spectrum disorder interferes with one's ability to read social cues and thus to "fit in," but rather than acting out in a negative way (some with ASD lash out using violence, presumably in response to the frustration of being unable to connect and communicate with others in the normal manner), she was just trying to be what she believed the young girls wanted--and apparently did not believe that she was succeeding at simply being their friend.

She needs help, not punishment.

My heart goes out to the girl, her family and her victims. I don't pretend to even begin to understand what was going on in her mind but I'm sure she deserves help rather than punishment. Indeed, because her name and photo have been published, her well-being will be at serious risk while she's inside.
I can't help feeling the judge should have ordered her identity to be witheld.

Very sad. She needs help not prison.

Its TYPICAL that people who don't understand ASD don't take that in to account. SHE'S NOT A NORMAL, RUN-OF-THE-MILL person, she needs help. She should have been put on a curfew and probation for 30 months to make her see that what she did was wrong - a prison sentence is only going to mess her up even more, through mixing with people who will influence her in more bad ways.

I've made many comments on here in the past few hours and here is my reason. I have a girl who is almost 12 and she has Autism. Now the only thing visably "girly" about is to the public is her long hair. She has boys toys, boys clothes, loves football etc. She also has no conception of the law, feelings, outcomes, or anything like that. She also has 1 friend but many people she knows. Although Gemma was older there will always be the same problems.... VERY few people adapt to any form of punishment therefore jail will do this girl no good. I would rather pay thousands to get her help than thousands to keep her in a place that will really only make her more distraught.

This girl obviously needs psychiatric help, and not being sent to a crime college.

I have nothing to declare but my curiosity

What she did was wrong.I ask myself in this day and age how she convinced those girls she was a boy but there you go, it seems she did. For all that despite the cries for equity and fairness I can't help feeling she needs help rather than jail. In the bigger picture of sexual offences hers does not feature very high in my view, wholly wrong what she did, she should be punished as a deterrent and a lesson but communuty service and some compulsary psychiatric help would have been my sentence. Then again that's only my opinion, others feel dfferently.

You don't need to dress up as a boy. There are plenty of young lesbians out there.
