Bright Ideas: Makoto Tojiki's 3D Light Sculptures

Sculptures That Help You See The Light

Eschewing traditional, boring materials like metal, marble or wood, artist Makoto Tojiki creates his sculptures out of something far more illuminating (sorry) – light.

How better to create a human or animal structure that casts No Shadow - the name of this extraordinary show.

Looking like holograms from a bleak future where man and beast have been replaced by a series of indestructible holograms (that’s our interpretation, anyway) Toijki’s sculptures are actually 3-dimensional optical illusions made out of thousands of LED lights.

Given his background in engineering (Tojiki has a degree in industrial design and designed electrical appliances for 5 years), it’s no surprise that his work is almost as impressive an example of science as it is art.

But for the artist himself, the meaning of the piece is about the nature of reality.

“If we extract just the light that is reflected from ‘something,’ are we still in the presence of that 'something?' Using contours of light, I try to express this 'something.’”
