Russia Protests: Dozens Of Arrests As Opposition Dispute Putin's Presidential Victory

Moscow Protest

Police have made dozens of arrests in Moscow as crowds gathered to protest Vladimir Putin's landslide victory in the country's presidential elections.

The protest outside the central election commission was organised by the Other Russia movement.

National Bolshevik Party leader Eduard Limonov was arrested at the protest, along with about 50 supporters, Moscow police said in a statement.

The party claimed the number of arrests was as high as 100.

Many of the demonstrators claimed that the official tally was some way off the real result, and that Putin should have faced a run-off in a second round of voting.

However Sky News reported that the protests were "lacklustre" and did not have the same feeling of momentum as the widespread protests in December which followed claims of voter fraud during parliamentary polls.

Protests and arrests were also reported in St Petersburg.

Sunday's presidential election, which Putin won with around 64% of the vote, was "clearly skewed" in favour of the United Russia leader according to the independent Organisation for Security and Co-operation.

Tonino Picula, the special co-ordinator to lead the short-term observer mission said there were "serious problems" and "irregularities" in the election.

The Organisation for Security and Co-operation (OSCE) is one of the world’s largest regional security organisation with 56 states from across the globe as members.

Picula said: "There were serious problems from the very start of this election. The point of elections is that the outcome should be uncertain. This was not the case in Russia. There was no real competition and abuse of government resources ensured that the ultimate winner of the election was never in doubt."

In a statement the OSCE said Putin had a "clear advantage" over his competitors in terms of media presence.

My parents and I moved to the states from Moscow in '91, I have always wondered how different my life would have been if we stayed....

Putin, "Vote for me (who is so insecure about myself, that I had something cosmetic done to my face to make me appear more 'likeable' more 'appealing' , more 'honest' ?

I think they did an awful job, and Putin is not as wise as I first thought him to be. Hmf

Sour grapes, he got a landslide victory. They just don't like it because they can't rob Russia blind themselves. How stupid were all the opposition candidates? I know let's have 4 opposition candidates, that way we'll have 7% of the vote each.

This is all nonsense. There have been no arrests, just a few people got detained for obstructing traffic. The troops you see were actually brought in to help clear snow. Someone from Socialist Worker just explained all this to me, and the fact that these photos are file photos that have been hauled out by the BBC on the orders of the UK Government.

Ha ha! It took me a while to understand that it was a joke (sound too real for a poor old soviet...)
The troops are certainly for clearing the snow. And all these people obstructing traffic were paid to do so by the American government.

Russian newspapers have acknowledged that there were arrests.

This is true, the imparcial coverage offered by Russia Today has clearly shown that the elections were fair.

Sorry...you need to read up on modern Russian political movements. The National Bolshevik Party is not the same as the Communist party.
09:29 PM on 03/05/2012
Ok, and what about the nationaliste parti that we suppport , some kind of Nazi. Or perhaps they are so kind that all opposed to Putin, work for Jesus ???

Bolshevik means majority, the term got a bad press for western political reasons when the majority (bolshevik) voted in favour of communist reforms. Translate the whole title, it's the National Majority Party, a bit like our coalition government.

it's started already, Putin's storm troopers breaking up a justifiable protest against the unfairness of the vote. Putin is in for a shock, he can't lock up half the population, Stalin's time came and went sixty years ago.

BREAKING NEWS: Stockholm, SWEDEN (AP) - The Ministry of Food has just announced that shops around UK are out of Fish and Chips. They have ordered Fish Cakes and French Fries from the United States as a replacement, but the government agency may not be able to quell the rioting that is sweeping the nation in time. France has pledged 1.3 billion Euros, but the Home Office has declined the offer, saying cryptically that it is now at a state of war with the French Menace. More news as it develops.

Vlad - the impaler of any form of democracy - Putin is of course ex KGB (a colonel I believe) and we wonder why/how this result could possibly have come about? Oh, just go figure.. Russian will never be a democracy in the style we in the west might like to see... It's/they're just not made this way. We in the "west" need to stop the 'carping' and trying to impose our will on another sovereign nation and instead try to find some common ground with VP or he'll lead his country closer to the Chinese or the other up and coming industrial powerhouses...
09:59 PM on 03/05/2012
I am afraid you are too late. Putin is already with the Chinese...
I agree with your point about imposing democracy. What is democracy anyway?
10:34 PM on 03/05/2012
Nothing that this country knows about!
05:18 PM on 03/06/2012
Hiya. I'm not too certain that Vlad is that 'close' to the Chinese in reality, as he proably sees them as a major threat.
As to democracy, according to the original Greek definition it means literally "people power" so by this standard we've been off the mark for centuries.
Don't give up hope just yet though please!!

Maybe they should some some of the footage of American cops macing, beating and brutalizing Amercians during the OWS protests. There has been ample reporting on voting irregularities in the US as well, I don't see why ANYBODY would want to point a finger at Russia.

Deal with your own mess before you start pointing fingers, a truism the U.S. and its uninformed citizens have rejected long enough. They're amping up the Cold War again and you sheep are just sitting by. Jesus...
