The possibility of a coalition re-think on child benefit for households with a higher-rate taxpayer will arguably be one of the biggest backtrack by ministers so far.

But it's just the latest in a fairly long list of U-turns performed by ministers. Some are trivial, others have been seen as significant victories for campaigners and the opposition.

continual u-turns are a result of basing policy on ideology rather than pragmatic fairness

tories are all about the ideology and it is often an unfair and unpleasant one that either panders to the tabloid readers or is designed to line the pockets of their business cronies

foul stench
