Fear Of Doctors Leads To Thousands Of 'Avoidable' Cancer Deaths

Cancer Diagnosis

Nearly 40% of people who fear they might have cancer delay visiting a doctor because they are worried about what they will find, according to new research.

Other sufferers are failing to recognise the symptoms of the disease at an early stage leading to thousands of avoidable deaths, Cancer Research UK said.

A report by the charity found that more than 75% of people asked to list the possible warning signs of cancer failed to mention pain, coughing or problems with bowels or bladder.

More than two-thirds of around 2,000 people surveyed in the UK also failed to list bleeding, while only one in four mentioned weight loss or mole changes.

Researches also found that a quarter of people who fear they may have the disease delay making a GP appointment because they are worried about wasting their doctor's time.

Statistics suggest 11,500 deaths could be avoided if the UK matched the best cancer survival rate in Europe.

But experts believe Britain is lagging behind because of its poor record in early diagnosis.

Professor Peter Johnson, Cancer Research UK's chief clinician, said: "If patients are diagnosed when the cancer is still in its early stages before it has had a chance to spread to other parts of the body it is more likely that treatment will be successful. That is why it is so important for people to be aware of things that might be early signs of cancer.

"Of course we are all frightened of hearing that we may have cancer. But people need to know that catching the disease early gives them much better odds of surviving it. The best precaution anyone can take is to be on the lookout for any changes in their bodies that seem unusual for them and to get them checked by a doctor."

The report, called Delay Kills, was funded by Tesco who have joined with the cancer charity to raise £10m to fund 32 early diagnosis research projects across the UK.

It's certainly not a "fear of doctors." It's a fear of being railroaded through an uncaring, money- grubbing, bankruptcy machine like some kind of hapless cash cow. America's medical system is more than an economic bubble. It is a triumph of collusion, greed, and influence that is destined to drive this nation to destruction.

How ignorant can you be, did you even read the article? This was about UK patients, where they have Universal Healthcare.

Nice to see that some people actually read the articles before they comment. Thanks.

I am absolutely agree with this story. I had bowel cancer and though my gp had diagnosed IBS I insisted on getting a referral for a colonscopy where I was diagnosed with a tumour the size of a small apple! I had none of the typical symptons as it was high up in the colon. I was fortunate that it had broken out of the bowel wall though my surgeon advised that it wouldn't have taken much longer. I had an operation to remove the tumour 4 yrs ago and was lucky that all lymph nodes were clear.

Glad you made it! My mother waited far too long to get checked for bowel cancer and died after her op and chemo at 74. She was a very intelligent woman, but not about her health.

All best to you from your neighbour Canada

Dear Lou, I am truly sorry to hear your sad story and thank you for sharing it with me. I feel if I can make more people aware than I have been able to do something worthwhile. Although a Cancer diagnosis is very scary it doesn't have to be the worse news. Its amazing what the medical proffession can do. I really want to encourage people to be brave, only they know how they feel and if something feels different than get an opinion and don't be fobbed off. Much better to be told yes you have cancer and yes we can do something than if you had come sooner we could have helped. Best wishes to you and your family

In America, fear of doctor bills is what deters many people. Dying is only the second or third worst thing that can happen to you in a hospital.

Right. try to blame it on fear of doctors when really it is fear of the "cure."

Given the less than effective practices of western medicine, putting faith in such professionals is often a grave mistake. The conventional cancer treatments are radiation and chemotherapy. These treatments are notorious for causing heavy damage to the human body, insomuch that they often can kill the patient, or leave them in a worse state than they were in beforehand. Additionally, chemotherapy has been shown to negatively impact DNA extending to offspring.

Though chemotherapy is able to destroy the cancer, it does not address the root cause of the cancer, nor does it offer a favorable chance of recovery.

WHAT ABOUT HAVING NO HEALTH INSURANCE AND NO MONEY TO PAY FOR TESTS????
03:21 PM on 03/06/2012
The study was done in England....they are on social healthcare so that is not a reason....good thought tho
03:23 PM on 03/06/2012
The lack of insurance is more of a problem in the United States. Britain has universal health coverage. It's scary, but true, to think that the problem of early detection for life threatening diseases is far more problematic in America than in any other developed country in the world.

I am with you there!! I have NEVER met a doctor yet that doesn't think they are a gift from God. Every prescription they write is an electronic leash to make sure your coming back. If you can't tell, I severely do not like doctors. Most people get better despite what their doctor does! And don’t get me started on the mid-evil practice of dentistry. Just remember there is no money in the cure, only the treatment and they will treat you to death.

My problem with the health care system is the sheer inconvenience, especially when you visit a specialist for the first time. Angling for a referral and appointment. Double checking with your insurance company ("Oh, they are now 'out of network' now. That web site must not have been updated.") Then the parking nightmare (I live in an urban area). Then all the paperwork (pen and paper, even in 2012!). Then the waits in the cold, clinical examining rooms. Then you never get the results, unless there is something wrong. A simple visit can kill half a day.

It's not fear of the doctors, it's the fees. They are never ending. When you think you're done paying for a routine visit and some lab results, there comes another bill, months later. I've gotten bills 9 months after the fact. America wouldn't stand for that if their auto shop sent them a bill for the repair bay, a different bill for the mechanic's services, another for the dealership cost and another for the transport fee for the spare part. Come on, health care is a long way from being fixed. Single payer would go a long way to straighten this out.

Not just the fees, but the uncertainty of what you will have to pay. The MD may be "in-network" but then subject to co-pays, deductibles and other OOPS. Then he refers you to a testing clinic which is out of network, with separate co-pays, deductibles and OOPS. The there is the "usual and customary" debate with the insurance company. Yes, we'll pay 60% but only 60% of "usual and customary."

I am not afraid of doctors. I am afraid of the bill. I was diagnosed with melanoma last year and even with insurance I had to pay thousands of dollars for my treatment. And it wasn't chemo or anything really crazy. Just a couple excisions, biopsies, and one expensive surgery. Over the course of two months I lost a third of my life savings. Not that I had that much to begin with, but imagine if it was a serious case. Now I am definitely avoiding the doctor because I don't have the money anymore. Not to mention, I have no follow up, no referral to a dermatologist, just a thank you , you should get that checked out in the future.

So you're being an @55h0le to people who don't have insurance and meanwhile you are on Medicare? Typical. Just so you know, people with insurance file for bankruptcy every day because of medical bills their insurance didn't cover.

That would be nice in 27 years if there is still a Medicare for me to avail myself of in the future. But the way things are going, I really doubt it will be there, or social security.

This makes me sooooooo mad! You can go to the doctor, but they won't do anything, just send you off with a prescription! I've had bleeding and abdominal pains for a year when my doctor finally sent me for a smear, but the hospital sent it back because my smear test wasn't due yet!!! After another year of waiting I finally got referred to a gynocologist, who is more busy appearing on embarrasing bodies then looking after me. I've had a scan and now have to wait 6 months for next appointment! I wonder how long before it's too late if it is something serious!
