A person has died at a care home in Cardiff after an incident involving a lift shaft, the BBC has reported.

South Wales police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, after ambulances were called to Pontcanna House, Cardiff, early Tuesday morning.

The elderly woman who died was a resident at the care home, which specialises in caring for people with Alzheimer's.

A staff member was also injured in the incident, and is recovering in hospital. South Wales Police said in a statement:

"Police were called to a residential care home in the Llandaff Road area of Cardiff shortly before 9.20am on Tuesday, 6th March following reports that a 96-year-old woman had died following an incident within the home."

"The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and an investigation is under way into her death."

Next of kin and HM Coroner have been informed.

No one from the care home was available to comment.
