Was Osama Bin Laden Really Buried At Sea? WikiLeaks Emails Suggest Al Qaeda Chief's Body Was Flown To US Military Mortuary

Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 6/03/2012 09:40 Updated: 6/03/2012 17:43

Osama Bin Laden was apparently buried in the waters of the north Arabian sea, but internal emails from intelligence service Stratfor, obtained by hacker group Anonymous and posted by WikiLeaks suggest otherwise.

According to official accounts, he was wrapped in a sheet and “eased” off the decks of the U.S.S Carl Vinson just hours after he was killed on May 2 in a United States-led operation, in accordance with Muslim tradition.

But a leaked email from Stratfor vice president for intelligence Fred Burton, sent on 2 May 2011, at 5.26am states: “Reportedly, we took the body with us. Thank goodness.”

A subsequent email on the same day at 5.51am states: “Body bound for Dover, DE on CIA plane. Than (sic) onward to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Bethesda.”

US forces said Bin Laden was killed in a siege at his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on 2 May 2011, just after 1am local time.

At 6.26am Burton wrote: “If body dumped at sea, which I doubt, the touch is very Adolph Eichman like. The Tribe did the same thing with the Nazi's ashes. We would want to photograph, DNA, fingerprint, etc.

“His body is a crime scene and I don't see the FBI nor DOJ letting that happen.”

The reference to Eichmann regards the cremation of the Nazi’s body following his capture, trial and execution, in order to prevent any memorial or shrine being built.

Stratfor CEO George Friedman appears to agree, noting: “Eichmann was seen alive for many months on trial before being sentenced to death and executed. No comparison with suddenly burying him at sea without any chance to view him which I doubt happened.”

By 1.36pm Burton writes again: “Body is Dover bound, should be here by now.”

The conversation takes a puzzling turn at 3.11pm, with Burton stating: “Down and dirty done, He already sleeps with the fish…”

A note adds: “It seems to me that by dropping the corpse in the ocean, the body will come back to haunt us… gotta be violating some sort of obscure heathen religious rule that will inflame islam?

"The US Govt needs to make body pics available like the MX’s do, with OBL’s pants pulled down, to shout down the lunatics like Alex Jones and Glenn Beck.”

The exchange casts a mystery over just what happened to the body of the Al Qaeda leader.

The thread of emails - under the heading The Global Intelligence Files - was published by WikiLeaks on 27 February 2012 and contains correspondence dated between July 2004 and late December 2011.

The site states: "They reveal the inner workings of a company that fronts as an intelligence publisher, but provides confidential intelligence services to large corporations, such as Bhopal's Dow Chemical Co., Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and government agencies, including the US Department of Homeland Security, the US Marines and the US Defence Intelligence Agency.

"The emails show Stratfor's web of informers, pay-off structure, payment laundering techniques and psychological methods."

The New American reports: “The release of the Stratfor emails will likely revive the debate over just what happened to bin Laden’s body and consequently, whether or not US forces actually killed the terrorist mastermind in the first place.

“Secrecy prior to the raid is understandable; a refusal to produce the key piece of evidence that the raid was successful, on the other hand, is quite curious indeed."

According to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, a member of the military “read prepared religious remarks” that were translated into Arabic at the burial ceremony.

The lair where Bin Laden lived in secrecy before the alleged final stand off with US Commandoes was razed to the ground last month.

Bin Laden moved into the three-storey house in 2005 and lived there until it was stormed by Navy Seals in May 2011.

The house was located just half a mile from one of Pakistan’s top army training academies, which caused embarrassment for the country’s intelligence services, AP reported.

US officials say there was no evidence senior Pakistan officials were aware of Bin Laden’s location.

Residents living nearby told the Independent they had thought the building would be turned into a mosque, school or clinic.

Shah Mohammad said: “I think they should build a mosque. If you build a school there, people will just associate it with Bin Laden.”

A source had told the paper demolition was on the cards ahead of the event, adding: “There is an issue, in our culture, of such places becoming shrines.”

DNA, photographs and finger-prints were all taken.
As for the body being a 'crime scene,' how would the FBI have jurisdiction over the Indian Ocean???

Another non-story by HP.

Seriously, who cares? Bin Laden still didn't benefit from 911 and he didn't do it either.

Now, Obama never released the 28 withheld pages from the 911 Commission's report as he had promised 911 victims' families to do.

There are far worse people on this planet. I think a most of them are unelected leaders or heads of state of countries whose populace stands no chance of getting rid of them. I am thinking closer to home.

As an Brit, I'm baffled by the level of concern some of you are showing for Bin Laden. (a) he's dead and the world's a better place for it, and (b) do you think Bin Laden and his supporters would be agonising if the situation was reversed?

As long as he is out of commission, it doesn't matter to me where his body is. It's his mind that wasy the dangerous part.

Let's see. Bin Laden's body in the ocean; Bin Laden's body in a morgue in Delaware. Which has the biggest impact on whether my husband can find work, my daughter can get the medical care she needs, my son can afford college, I can refinance my mortgage? You can want the truth, you can demand the truth, and you can imagine that the truth will make some difference in your life, but really? Will it? I think this is interesting, but in the long history of governments it's just one more "who cares what the little people think?" issue that is neither here nor there in comparison to real life.

You are so far from the truth I can only laugh! I am an Obama Democrat, a tree-hugger, a progressive, liberal, whatever the heck you want to call me. I marched for civil rights and against the Viet Nam War and support NOW, Planned Parenthood, the National Wildlife Federation, and the DNCC. For most of my career I was a drug and alcohol abuse therapist, ran pre-release programs for ex-offenders, and did a huge amount of work on women's rights issues. I got my master's degree from an historically black university (Go Lincoln Lions!) and today write a column for the largest and oldest diversity oriented publication serving higher education. If you can find a less "Tea Part" than me, I salute you. The "maniac" I won't dispute. I would like to say, however, that you, sir or madame, have an issue with making assumptions based on nest to no actual evidence.

Agree with you 100% and I'm also an Obama supporter, liberal, Democratic Committee person who protested the Vietnam War while my husband was serving in Duc Pho. Who cares what was done with OBL's body? We cannot possibly rid the world of every vicious, hate-filled lunatic but at least that one is gone! The previous administration's economic policies (costly invasion of Iraq, unfunded Medicare Part D, huge tax cuts for the wealthy while paying for 2 wars, bank & auto bailouts) put us into a huge economic hole. The President's efforts are beginning to turn things around. If we don't elect one of the GOP candidates, perhaps your husband will be able to find work, health care and education will be affordable, credit card abuses won't allowed, Veterans will continue to receive proper treatment, and maybe we won't invade Iran.

Do you really believe he was killed by USA on 2nd May? He died two years ago in the mountains because of his failed kidneys. This is more believable that the first version. USA would not through him in the Sea without first showing the world that they killed the most wanted person. Not many people believe anymore what the Americans say. You cannot make everybody fool all the time.

I do hope he was not cremated, as some reports state. That would be a major gaffe that would be another blow to the US' standing in the muslim world, although that probably couldn't get worse than it is.

I guess they would, because they wouldn't want to rob any muslim of a rite that is considered essential: being buried with the integrity of your body (the same goes for jews, if I'm informed correctly). Having no body would mean one cannot enter into paradise / rise on Judgment Day

(It is not how he died, but how his body was 'disposed of'.)

A muslim would say it is for Allah to judge him, regardless of the sins he committed.

The comments are as interesting as the story. Seems there is a need to believe that OBL is still among us......

Reading the report again, it seems that we're talking about e-mails among guys working for an outfit with "connections". Not in other words, from the people doing the business itself. The logical conclusion then is that what we're reading is what they thought was happening, or what they thought ought to happen. The later mail about "sleeping with the fishes" suggest that reality caught up with them.

Not much to go on, but that seems to me the logical interpretation. Am I missing something?

The Huffington Post is also a publication of misinformation.

They refuse to report on a documented US government assassination and cover up - the murder of anti- corruption whistleblower in New York City.

Read the details and ask why this is not national news:

They might have report it: Check the Gossip and Rumor pages because it isn't news. It's conjecture. Please excuse us for not considering someone's blogspot to be a trustworthy news source. When it's news supported by facts and evidence, you'll probably see it on the national news.
