Coronation Street: Royle Family's Sue Johnston Latest Famous Face To Join Cobbles Cast

Another Famous Face To Join The Street?

Coronation Street has played home to many a well-known actor - Nigel Havers, Andrew Sachs, Peter Kay, even Status Quo's Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt rocked up in a cameo appearance once - and the latest famous face to be spotted across the cobbles could be Sue Johnston.

Johnston, who once complained that all the roles she wanted always went to Alison Steadman of Abigail's Party fame, has carved a niche for herself across popular soap, comedy and drama.

She spent eight years as the beleaguered matriarch Sheila Grant in Liverpudlian soap Brookside in the eighties, when her husband Bobby was played by Ricky Tomlinson.

The couple's on-screen chemistry was given a comedic turn by writer Caroline Aherne, for the prize-winning Royle Family, where Johnston's helpless cry of 'Anthony!' at her hapless son became a recognisable refrain.

More recently, she played second fiddle to Trevor Eve in Waking the Dead, as well as getting up and sitting on the roof as a mother driven to distraction by her son's marriage, in Kay Mellor's ode to her own mother A Passionate Woman.

So, husbands, sons, dead bodies and climbing on the roof.... a stint on Britain's busiest cobbled street sounds like a natural next stop.
