Jennifer Aniston And Cameron Diaz To Compete For Comedy Award - Who's Funnier? (VOTE)

Who's The Queen Of Rom-Coms?

Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz are to go head-to-head for the title of funniest woman, with both of them being nominated for Best Actress at the Second Annual Comedy Awards.

Bridesmaids stars Kristin Wiig and Melissa McCarthy and Crazy, Stupid, Love star Emma Stone are also up for the Best Actress category, however, none have the same long-standing rivalry as Aniston and Diaz.

However, Diaz, to be fair, has also been associated with some of the best rom-coms of the nineties. The blonde beauty made a stunning breakthrough, both in looks and comic timing, holding her own against Jim Carrey in The Mask as his love interest. From there, she went on to play the lead in one of the decade's mould-breaking movies, There's Something About Mary.

Since then, directors have continued to turn to Diaz whenever they need a likeable female, even just in voice alone. When she became the voice of Princess Fiona in the Box Office and Oscar-winning hit franchise Shrek, a whole new generation received a blast from her charm-gun.

But that doesn't mean she hasn't played a part in the dozens of bog-sub-standard rom-coms churned out of Hollywood every year, including easily forgettable films such as What Happens In Vegas, in which she stars alongside Ashton Kutcher as a women compelled, for legal reasons, to become part of a fake couple. The Holiday, In Her Shoes, The Sweetest Thing and Charlie's Angels also starred Diaz, while her next role sees her strap a prosthetic baby bump on to her perfectly-formed frame to star alongside Jennifer Lopez in What To Expect When You're Expecting.

Shrek may have given Diaz a part in one of the biggest film franchises of the past decade, but in Aniston's portfolio is a lead role in one of the most enduringly popular sitcoms ever made.

For some Aniston will always be known as Rachel from Friends, the coffee-house waitress whose ditzy charm (and much-copied haircut) is still enjoyed today on a million daily re-runs, despite the show finishing eight years ago.

The past few years have seen her carry her girl-next-door appeal over to the big screen, with mixed results. Sticking to what she knows best, she's continued to play female lead roles that women want to be friends with and men want to marry. Her part as Jennifer in Marley & Me saw her an adorable, doomed pooch play her main companion (with Owen Wilson in a bystander's role); in Just Go With It, it was Adam Sandler carrying the hairbrush when she played his loyal assistant posing as his soon-to-be-divorced wife.

Then there are the films that tainted Aniston's credibility - The Break-Up, Rumour Has It and Love Happens can all be filed under this category. And the 1996 vroom vehicle She's The One, in which she starred against none other than... Cameron Diaz herself.

More recently, Aniston, just like Diaz, decided it was time to release her inner bad girl. Last year she starred as Dr. Julia Harris, a dentist whose sexually predatory behaviour caused all sorts of office fall-out, in Horrible Bosses.

The film, overall, received more positive feedback from the critics than Diaz's Bad Teacher.

The Standard wrote: "It's far from perfect, but it features more laughs than Bad Teacher and The Hangover Part II combined," while The Telegraph said: "Overall, a pleasant surprise."

Both actresses have had their brilliant career-defining roles, and both have had shameful parts in films they'd probably like to forget. However, it seems cinema-goers have become tired of watching Diaz pulling off her kooky character schtick, whereas Aniston fans have remained loyal, with the buzz around the Friends star still going strong eight years after her TV finale. If anyone is to take Meg Ryan's crown as the queen of rom-com, then I'd like to give it to Jen. But which star, if either, has ever truly made you laugh out loud? Or is this someone else far more deserving? Let us know in the comments below.
