Mass Effect 3's Commander Shepard Is Gay And Proud

Is Mass Effect 3 the first game to embrace a gay storyline in a grown-up way?

The new game featuring Commander Shepard, and released on 6 March, features a plotline where you can choose a gay relationship for the main character.

Shepard's romance includes a kiss at a bar in a club, a topless "next morning" scene of Shepard and his partner in bed and Shepard talking through a tough day ahead with his partner.

Casey Hudson, Mass Effect 3's Executive Producer tweeted over the weekend that the game will support "wider options for love interests" including same-sex for both male and female characters.

It's a choose your own love adventure, giving you the option to accept advances or not during gameplay.

The game's developers told Kotaku that it's not a political statement, but as part of a role playing game, it makes sense for gamers to choose their character's sexual orientation.

Ray Muzyka co-founder of Mass Effect studio BioWare, told Kotaku: "We let players take on a role and really immerse themselves on how they feel they want to be playing the game. Be true to that. Be true to your ideal of a game of choice."

Fellow BioWare founder Greg Zeschuk said: "If there's a political bent to it, it's very Libertarian. It's like... yeah, we make the choices available. You decide what you want to do. We're not pushing any particular direction with most of our stuff."

Same sex romance coming soon in SWTOR too! Bioware rocks!
If only Shepard can save us from the repubs.

Bioware has always offered LGBT options in its games, at least as far back as I can remember. Mass Effect was a big anomaly for not having them (no, damnit, Liara does NOT count as a lesbian option for Fem Shep! She's not really a woman, the Asari have no males or females, just ladylike mono gendered people!). What I find most revolutionary isn't the fact that you can have same sex relationships but that the shuttle pilot, Cortez? That he is an openly gay soldier with a husband. Too bad the husband was killed in action, but still. It's such a sweet touching story and I love that my Fem Shep can be there to help him work through it without it turning into a romance option for her. I also liked all the interstellar strange you could get in 2! Though I think if the Prothean becomes a romance option that's just taking it a bit too far! Javik's funny but something just doesn't sit right with loving up the last member of an extinct species.

You can marry same-sex in Skyrim, as well. It isn't the same as the Mass Effect, outtake, though. Which was pretty awesome.

This just makes business sense, to give the player choices that will endear them to the game and future games by the same company.

My femm Shep has been with Liara since ME1. I know she is blue but my femm Shep loves her. I wonder who is going to try to get between them and steal Shep in ME 3. Kelly the assistant tried, but that didn't last.

I'm off to buy a copy of Mass Effect 3! :-)

As mentioned in the first link, "Mass Effect 3" isn't the first. "Dragon Age: Origins" (also from BioWare) also offers male and female same-sex pairings as choices for players.

Well to be fair, Bioware has been offering gay relationship options for a long long time. The thing is that the diversity and options are so much bigger in ME3 than I've seen in any game before. What's more, the Mass Effect series hasn't been nearly as LGBT friendly as the other games. No gay options in 1 (Liara doesn't count, damnit, she comes from a monogendered species she's not really a woman) and Kelly, as far as I know, was the only option in 2 for a lesbian lover. I was rather disappointed!

Quite true, but the point I was making is that, wide diversity aside (I even forgot to mention Skyrim, which I'm playing right now!), ME3 isn't "the first game to embrace a gay storyline in a grown-up way". :]

I guess I'm behind the times. I'm 65. What ever happened to the real thing?!? There is mystery and romance, broken hearts and yes bitterness. It has to be more exciting than a video game!

The real thing is all well and good but in story-driven RPGs, people like to have a little more oomph.

It is what it is.

These plot driven games are a modern equivalent of fiction - and the abundance of romantic and even erotic fiction did not decrease the "real thing".
18:18 on 07/03/2012
That's excellent, except for one thing: Male Shepard still can't romance Garrus... It's a shame, but I don't mind "Sweaty" Alenko... I'd prefer Wrex... -_-

Progressive and awesome. Actually a couple of characters in there are gay. What a great step in the right direction for equality!
