Boris Johnson Hints That Ken Clarke Was Opposed To Crossrail

Boris Johnson
Boris Johnson announced a "completely new approach" to running London transport.

London Mayor Boris Johnson has unveiled his plans for London transport in “the biggest transformation since the Victorian age”.

Speaking to Conservative activists in Canary Wharf the Mayor of London - fighting for re-election in less than two months time, also hinted that Ken Clarke had been opposed to the mammoth CrossRail project currently being built underneath the city.

According to Johnson, a government minister had described it to him as “a giant trench across London”. He added mischievously, “I’m not going to name names, but it was someone not far from the Justice Department”.

The London Mayor claimed he would be the best candidate to represent London “I rugby tackled my friends in No. 11, and got a good settlement in the CSR”.

He warned of an “intensified crisis” in London transport as it has to cope with increasing numbers of users – “at levels not seen since the 1950’s”.

London’s transport system should not have to cope “within the creaking, straining corsets of Victorian infrastructure”, he said.

He said he would seek to expand the amount of driverless trains being used on London transport. "I can drive a Jubilee line train, and that’s saying something," he quipped.

Johnson pointed to other underground systems to support his plan, pointing out that some parts of the Paris metro already run with automated trains.

“Will we let ourselves be left behind by Paris? Even the most reactionary trade union leader should be in favour of this!”

The mayor declared a drive for financial efficiency, saying he wouldn’t spend “money on a load of old cobblers like the previous administration”.

Johnson said he had managed to find £2bn in the TFL budget already. He cut the number of TFL directors by 25%, “as they luxuriated in their offices”. 23 buildings and over 6000 desks have been sold, according to the Mayor.

One of the biggest savings, Johnson said, was ending the private-public partnership model for London transport. He described it as a “license to steal… one of the most baleful legacies of the Gordon Brown epoch”.

Johnson mounted a strong defence of London’s bike-hire scheme, attacking suggestions that the scheme was originally developed by the previous mayor, Ken Livingstone:

“They had no plan and no budget. Nor did they have a plan on how they’d raise the budget for the bikes. With their policies, who’d they get to fund it? ASLEF? The RMT?”

He went on to thank Barclays for supplying £50m of funding for the bikes. “I think they could do another £50m, let’s send a message across to them!” he added.

The mayor pledged to find extra savings through new technology and safety measures. “The fewer cock-ups there are, the less expense in recovery. That is the way to hold down tube fares. This is not the time to make short-term, unaffordable promises”.

Johnson attacked Ken Livingstone’s time in office as “crazed 1970’s profligacy”.

“£37500 was spent on one trip to see Fidel Castro, of no conceivable economic benefit to London. £10000 on one subscription to the Morning Star. Money was fire-hosed away on pork barrelled rhubarb” he said.

He claimed that it would be a step back to vote for the “newt-fancying, tax dodging” Livingstone, who he criticised for his “high-taxing, chateau neuf-du-pape, bendy-bus fetishism [and] Bolivarian revolutionary socialism”.

The mayor was optimistic about London’s prospects, saying the economy was “unbelievably resilient”. “We are exporting more cake to France, bikes to Holland and TV aerials from wherever it is….Wandsworth!”

If your report is correct then this AGAIN reinforces the analasyis and the conducted camapgn by the KHOODEELAAR! "No" to Crossrail hole Camapgn in defence of the Brick Lane London E1 area in the inner city East London borough of Tower Hamlets. Khoodeelaar! has always maintained that Crossrail was a crass product of Big Business confecting it to get hold of £Billions of UK public money on contracts and that the reason why CrossRail was being peddled so persistently by the given ministers was not at all to do th the expressed ordinary, objectively judged and stated transport needs of the London public but everything to do with the grip that Big Biz interest has over UK Executive as well as over UK Parliament.

Well at least automated trains can't demand £850 bonuses for doing their damn job.

Absolutely correct.

Do not want to be on a train that has no driver, theyre so wrapped up in trying to copy other countries they blind themselves.
07:45 AM on 03/09/2012
JB101.......before driverless trains are introduced, every single platform should be fitted with barriers with automatic doors that only open when a train is stopped in the station. The technology is already here and it isn't a matter of copying other countries.......however, you only have to see the trains in Singapore to see that we are well behind when it comes to a modern underground train system. Platform barriers will also stop the cases of suicide, accident and even murder that happen on our underground stations today. Now don't make fun of my screen name because I really am going blind and an obvious person who is liable to fall onto the tracks if no barriers are fitted.

ok first, i wouldnt make fun of your screenname..i dont think i've done that yet and will not..and i am sorry that youre going blind..i have read and heard of the breakthroughs that are being made to combat blindness and i hope it works for you soonest and i wish you all the best. Also i do understand what youre saying about automated barriers etc, i have nothing against that..its automated trains without drivers i dont like..now i know there are trains that are automated with drivers sitting there incase something goes wrong, but from my understanding theyre talking about fully automated without drivers. THAT is a bad idea to me, i do not like the sound of noone at the controls..and i dont mean a pesron sitting in a booth somewhere with 20 screens and 50 buttons trying to keep track of a few dozen trains..i mean one person one train..and that person on the train. I believe you'll find that theres a lot of people feel the same way..humans should ALWAYS be part of the equation at a ground level

07:50 AM on 03/09/2012
Perhaps not but something has to be done to get the cost of fares under control and when drivers are paid huge sums just for turning up and doing their job, something is wrong. Their pay award is outrageous and it's hardly any surprise that the cost of a ticket is so high. That Bob Crow is pricing his members out of a job and he knows it. He obviously only cares about one thing and that's his own pay.

They would have to be installed with a system that detects people being trapped or caught on the tracks, otherwise it will all end in tragedy!
08:11 PM on 03/08/2012
Trains will have a quota for the number of people they are allowed to drive over. Once they go beyond that the automatic brake will come on.
11:25 AM on 03/09/2012
DLR has had driver-less trains for more than 20 years.

That way we can make more people unemployed with no prospects and no worthwhile role in life
05:39 PM on 03/08/2012
Don't get me wrong, I totally see what you're saying, but I don't think it's the right attitude when it comes to progress.

All sorts of jobs have been given to machines since the industrial revolution. When we stopped needing people to hand-build cars, alot of people lost their jobs, but I think we can agree affordable cars are an important part of society today and wouldn't be possible if we couldn't have the process largely done by machines.
07:56 PM on 03/08/2012
If you want a stable, worthwhile society, people must have things to do. it is possible to mechanise the railways, the underground without having drivers, but their work does not mean they sit there and just press a button. Try watching The Tube http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01d8trv/The_Tube_Episode_3/ and you will see what they do.

Years ago, many people were employed in manual work that are now done by machines and many traditional jobs have disappeared.

Mechanisation can make life easier, but it can destroy communities and then the sense of belonging to society.

I just wonder where we are progressing to when the opportunities to carry out meaningful work are getting less and less.

Obviously Boris would like to see all public transport privatised and his cronies will benefit.

Remember there are no millionaires driving trains, but there are a select few who became multi-millionaires when they gained ownership of the former public services.

As for affordable cars being important, I would rather see an affordable public transport system, which reduces pollution and gives those who do not drive more mobility. Not everybody can or wants to drive.

They can get minimum wage jobs building the airport Borris is planning !
04:52 PM on 03/08/2012
If Boris ran Ken over with that bus how many points is that worth?
08:16 PM on 03/08/2012
That willl depend on whether ken gets up or not !
