London 2012 Olympics: Tube Workers To Be Paid £850 A Day During Games

Thousands of London Underground workers have been offered a payment of £850 each for working during the 2012 London Olympic Games, it has been revealed.

The Rail Maritime and Transport union had declared a dispute with London Underground after the lack of progress over an Olympic payment. However there have been talks this week at the conciliation service Acas.

The union said it had received an offer of £850 for all Tube staff, adding it would affect up to 18,000 workers.

General secretary Bob Crow said: "Clearly moving from offering nothing to the latest offer of £850 is a massive shift on the part of London Underground.

"The offer will now be considered by our reps and by the full executive before we make a formal response."

The union had rejected previous offers, saying there were too many strings attached to proposed deals.

The RMT has struck several deals with rail companies for extra pay during the London Games this summer, including a bonus of £500 for staff at Virgin Trains and Network Rail, £600 for London Overground workers and an agreement with Docklands Light Railway which union officials said could be worth up to £2,500.

The union is balloting hundreds of administrative staff it represents at Transport for London (TfL) for industrial action over "severely restricted" annual leave during the Games.

Officials claimed that leave had been banned altogether for the duration of the London 2012 Olympic Games in one department, saying this would make life "impossible" for many staff, especially those with school-age children.

The RMT also announced it will ballot workers at Tube Lines for industrial action in a row over pensions and travel passes.

The union said it wanted employees at Tube Lines, now a subsidiary of TfL, to be able to join the company's pension scheme and receive the same travel concessions as other staff.

Howard Collins, LU's chief operating officer, said: "We have had productive discussions with the unions this week and put forward our proposals about how we can fairly reward staff.

"We have put forward an offer which would see station, maintenance, service control staff and operational managers receive up to £850 for working flexibly during the 2012 London Games, subject to attendance, customer satisfaction scores and agreement from operational staff to work flexibly in order to deliver a successful Games.

"In return we are asking staff to work longer hours at different times of the day, to be prepared to work extra hours and to be more flexible in how and where they carry our their role for us during these crucial weeks. We know our employees want to play their part in delivering a great games for London, so reaching agreement on this will allow all of us to focus on that exciting challenge together."

Lee Jones, operations director for Tube Lines, said: "We have been discussing this issue with our trade unions for some time, and we will continue to try to find a way forward through constructive discussion. We would urge the RMT to withdraw its threat of a strike ballot, which will not achieve anything."

£850 a day....Not another mistake from the Huff Post, perhaps you guys should spend less time censoring posts and more time getting accurate story headlines, as every first post i put up on any subject seems to go missing.

I wonder what the general secretary gets then, a tad more than 850,I'll wager.
01:42 PM on 03/08/2012
Will the 850 bonus only be given to the drivers or also to staff on the platforms? I can sympathise with the latter as they will have to handle so many more people constantly....

Huff. Its not a daily bonus. It is a one off bonus.

they should think themselves lucky to get a bonus at all.

their bonus should be to get to keep their jobs

I just wish someone would give me a bonus

NG,
I wasn't defending the bonus. I think it is outrageous.

Just wanted to flag up a correction.

£850 per diem equals £212,000+ annual for a five day week?, irrespective of the duration, it seems rather an over the top reward for doing their normal job.

Or are these guys actually bankers doing a bit of part time?
01:41 PM on 03/08/2012
I'm afraid you've fallen foul of nother example of a made up HuffPost headline having no truth in it but used just to create a reaction. It's actually a one off bonus to cover the whole period of the Olympics, not a daily rate. Still, they seem happy to report inaccurately and nobody there is bothered as all they want to do is fill blank space. What they fill it with is neither here nor there....I am convinced these 'reporters' get paid based on the number of 'hits' each of their articles get so the inducement is to lie and be sensational, rather than accurate and informative.
03:11 PM on 03/08/2012
It must have got mixed up with the daily rate someone said Cameron is on.

I realised it was not a valid item, there's no way in this world they would pay such money to train or bus drivers.

Unless, as I said, they were bankers, doing a bit on the side to make up for their losses in bonus.

If these people don't like their jobs, they shouldn't be in them!

London has 235,177 people unemployed and ready to fill these roles for a much fairer wage! Lower wages means more staff means higher safety and efficiency.

Why is it okay for Greedy Bankers then'...They started the ball rolling didn't they...If everyone joined a union instead of carping'..They might get more respect from employers and get fairer wages'..Yes I agree' it seems a lot to offer the Tube Workers'..But the Tories accuse us of being envious of Bankers'...Is this the boot on the other foot eh?...Trouble is'...It's always been a race to the bottom' with this Tory Government'....Don't you think they should set an example'..Maybe Pay their fair share of Taxes' for instance..?
01:00 PM on 03/09/2012
This is not about bankers this is about the greedy and I say it again GREEDY..rail personel trying to hold the city to ransom all because of the olympics, make hay as the sun shines is their GREEDY philosophy does not matter about the rail fare paying passengers, its all about "what can I get out of this".As to your union culture you can shove all unions where the sun shines, all delegates that YOU pay for every month are only concerned in what they can get out odf it...get a good lawyer and he will make sure sure you get what you are entitled too ,unions ruined this country and will continue trying to do so ....think about this...how much do you pay ...every month towards your union ? and what do you get from it? NOTHING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.....when you need them you get NOTHING....anywya mate have a nice day and take care...thats just my opinion. PS.it wont affect me because I dont visit London, to me... its the s*** hole of the uk ..no doubt that will create more diaogue hahahah.
