Number 13 Banned From Council Houses In Durham

Number 13 House

PA/Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 08/03/2012 11:03 Updated: 08/03/2012 11:03

Durham County Council will ban the number 13 from council houses after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The 'unlucky' number will erased from streets and cul-de-sacs, on new builds and conversions in existing streets. They've made the decision to help house sellers, many of which struggle to sell homes with the superstitious address.

The authority has taken over the street name and numbering function from the former local borough and district councils, and has had to set out a fresh policy.

Other issues included an agreement not to name streets after living people, and a policy that street names should reflect local geography and history.

Dave Wilcox, Durham County Council's strategic highways manager, said: "Our new street naming and numbering policy is based on those used by the county's former district and borough councils, most of which specified that 13 would not be used in numbering schemes.

"This was primarily to reflect the concerns of housing developers who often struggle to sell homes located on plot 13.

"There have also been occasions in the past where the council has been asked to re-number a property as 12a rather than 13 by developers or homeowners."

Fear of the number 13 is an official phobia, named triskaidekaphobia, and has been linked to the ancient Persians, Viking myth and the Christian tradition as there were 13 diners at the Last Supper.

Some airlines do not have a 13th row, and certain hotels have no room 13; however, the number is considered lucky in Tibet and parts of Italy.

"The 'unlucky' number will erased from streets" where is the missing BE in the sentence?
Another example of the lack of proof reading at HUFF & PUFF prior to publishing on the web.

This is nothing new. The South Oxhey estate near Watford in Herts (several thousand homes) was built after the last war to house families from London. There is not a number 13 anywhere on the original estate (it has since been added to). My parents also happened to have lived in number 11, which was next to number 15 Harewood Road.

And this is what council tax payers have to contribute towards?

I have never heard of anything more stupid in my life.

Will they also ban people born on the 13th of the month from working there?

Will they also stop people working on the 13th of every month?

Whatever next?

Number 13 erased for bad luck, yet number 69 probably kept as a good luck charm!

So when Judas joined Jesus and the other eleven disciples he became the thirteenth member around the table. Because Judas betrayed Jesus he came to a sticky end. 13 is not unlucky! Would you turn your nose up at 13 million from the lottery?

O dear what ever next? Friday the 13th or the number 13 is no more lucky or un-lucky than any other number, to remove a house number from a street, reeks of crass stupidity.
The Friday the 13th myth came about because of the greed of the king of France and the Vatican Pope, There greed led too the decimation of the Knights Templar, easily noted as being the worlds first bankers, I,E France had no money, the vatican was corrupt, so on Friday the 13th of october 1307, the templars where rounded up on some simple charges and there wealth shared

The only time I won a raffle prize was with ticket No.13, and I'm still around to tell the tale 50 years later. A load of superstitious twaddle being given a veneer of respectability.

Is today April 1st?

I take it this is no joke?

No, it's March 7th. Remember this is County Durham where promotions are made by drawing names from a tea cosy and if a dead donkey ran for election to the council it would win.

don't know you, or your sex, but I love your way of thinking. It's trivia before reality, so now I'm back too Skyrim, at least in that world you can kill stupid people and chase butterflies

Have these people nothing better to do? Give them a van and cleaning materials and send them out into the countryside to clean all the road signs.

Absolute nonsense.
