Roger Johnson, Wolves Captain, Apologises For Turning Up To Training Worse For Wear

Was Wolves' Captain Howling?

Wolves captain Roger Johnson has apologised for turning up to training worse for wear on Monday.

And the club confirmed that the ex-Birmingham City has been punished for being in breach of club discipline.

Johnson today said: "My conduct and approach to training on Monday was below the high standard the club rightly needs and demands from me – and what I demand from myself," said Johnson.

"I have apologised to the manager, my team-mates and the club."

Johnson, dropped for caretaker manager Terry Connor's first two matches in charge, will pay a £50,000 fine as senior figures at the club reacted with fury.

The centre half was among the substitutes for Connor's first game at Newcastle and remained on the bench for last Sunday's five-goal thumping at Fulham.

It is alleged that Johnson drowned his sorrows afterwards and turned up for work with the effects of a night out still obvious. He was sent to train with Wolves' development squad.

Manager Terry Connor clarified that the matter had been dealt with in-house, while Johnson was ordered to train with the development squad as punishment.

Signed for £4.5m from Birmingham City in the summer, he has not started the last two matches and his indiscretion came less than 24 hours after Sunday's chastening 5-0 defeat to Fulham.

The team currently lie in 18th with a measly 22 points, and Connor has been put in charge until the end of the season after Mick McCarthy was sacked following a 5-1 Black Country defeat to West Brom at Molineux.

Despite his antics, he will retain the captaincy.
