Tim Farron And Nick Clegg To Rally Lib Dems At Spring Conference

Nick Clegg and the President of the Lib Dems Tim Farron will open the party's spring conference on Friday, urging the party to put the past behind them and fight for every seat in May's local elections.

Tim Farron, who has been openly hostile to some of the NHS reforms likely to be debated this weekend, will tell activists that the party has much to be proud of in terms of getting its policies into law.

“We got three quarters of our manifesto into Government policy, so I hereby allow you to stop saying sorry for the quarter we didn’t get," he will tell delegates in Gateshead.

“And if people wanted that missing quarter, well they should have flipping voted for us shouldn’t they?”

This year's spring conference takes place under the shadow of resentment by many Lib Dems at Andrew Lansley's Health and Social Care Bill, which is still stuck in the House of Lords.

Nick Clegg and the senior Lib Dem Peer Baroness Williams insisted at the end of last month that they had secured changes to the Bill to ensure that profit was never put before patients.

However many attempts in the House of Lords to weaken Lansley's aim for greater competition in the NHS have failed to pass in the Lords, and the Bill remains more or less in the same state as it was before the letter was signed.

There is a risk that delegates - who within the Lib Dems have much greater powers than similar activists than in other parties - could pass a motion this weekend demanding further changes to the Bill.

Huffpost UK asked the prominent Lib Dem blogger Mark Pack whether he expected a motion calling for the Bill to be dropped.

"That’s an outcome," he said. "I think the most likely outcome will be that because of the respect that Shirley Williams is held in, they’d push for a number of changes but not oppose the passing of the Bill."

But Pack said it was misleading to see any grassroots motions against coalition policy as a defeat for Lib Dem members of the Cabinet.

"I think the thing to bear in mind, Lib Dem parliamentarians quite like being pushed by the grassroots. If you go into negotiation with a Tory opposite number to try and push them on an issue, if you can publicly demonstrate to them that you’re under pressure – that makes your negotiating position stronger.

"The party’s experience after the last spring conference was hugely helpful in terms of strengthening the party."

In his speech on Friday Nick Clegg is expected to say: “We’ve made some difficult decisions, not all of them popular. But we made all of them with only one test in mind: What was the right thing to do for the country?

“And now it is time to move on. To stop justifying being in Government and start advertising being in Government. To stop lamenting what might have been and start celebrating what is. To stop defending our decisions and start shouting our achievements from the rooftops.

“So let’s tear off that rear view mirror and look straight ahead. Let’s get on with the job that we all came into politics to do. Making this a more liberal nation.”

The Lib Dems just can't help putting their feet in it . They haven't heard yet how unhappy most of this nation is right now with the idiots who are making all the policies that are p**ing every one off.Clegg told every one he wrote 3/4 of the queens speach. If he had a functional brain he'd have kept quiet and let dodgy Dave take the blame for such a load of tripe. Now The Lib Dems are reminding us that they are responsible for most of the policies as if the public are delighted with them. They don't realize how people are demoralised with what is going on.Lib Dems should listen to the peoples feelings and hide away for a bit.

What a sad sad state our politics are in. For most people there is no party they feel they can trust to carry out the wishes of the voter. Most of us do not even trust our MP to tell the truth. When election time comes we tend to vote not for the party we want, but for the party who appears likely to do the least damage. Votes at election time have degenerated into most of us doing damage limitation because there is no one party most of us can fully support and none we can place our trust in. We need something new, that is an almost universally held belief. BUT where are we going to get this from? that is the question. I know we have the likes of the BNP etc but for most of us the thought of them in power is frightening. Anyone got any workable ideas, heaven knows we need a miracle. Meanwhile we are stuck on the same old merry go round with no way off.

You have repeated my own thoughts. Who can we trust? Certainly this Coalition government has shown us one thing for certain - the Lib Dems do not deserve another shot at government! They like the Conservatives have reneged on some many election promises they should all be walking around with Pinocchio noses a mile long. But it does not end there because the once 'Best in the World' Civil Service has also fallen foul of being man aged by shallow-in-it for ourselves individuals. I am old enough to despair because I can remember this country when we had a right to be proud of our administrative systems. That was a time when people worked together not for individual promotion.
If something genuinely new is not soon put in place of what we currently have to suffer then things can only get worse for all of us bar the very wealthy who suck the majority dry.

if ever there was a time for compusory voting this is it.
there is time between now and the next election to make it illegal not to vote ata general election

I have been in local elections where the vote has been 12% how pathetic is that and general elections are not that much better

if you don't attend you can't amend

Quite right. But at the moment if everyone who could vote did we'd probably still end up with another Coalition. The fact that no one trusts any of the current crop of parties would not change the current status quo. Perhaps its time for a Union to make itself a political party that understands the needs of the majority?
05:53 PM on 03/09/2012
Clearly the voters are to blame so they must be unreliable and not worthy of having votes. Instead of changing the government it seems Mr Farron wants to change the voters and replace them with new ones more amenable to him.

if everyone voted then neither you or Fallon could complain about what you got

you may not like it but complain about it, well you had your say at the ballot box

you may have missed the point ,if you vote for someone it means you have some confidence in them ,i dont so i dont vote ,if no one voted for any of them they might have to up their game and things may get a bit more transparent .

I find the wall-eyed approach of the current LD party very difficult to comprehend...

Don't they realise that, come election time, they will be slaughtered at the polls?
Hasn't it dawned on them that the toxic tories have made them as toxic as they are?
Don't they know that most of them, come election time, will be looking for a job?

Of the three main parties, they remain the least worst choice, but that won't help them when it comes to local or national elections for decades, and perhaps more..

If I see another LD minister prodded on sharp sticks to the despatch box to defend the indefencible, to reason the unreasonable or to support the insupportable, whilst tory ministers sit behind them, holding their sides to stop themselves laughing one more time, I think I'll have to turn off the News, it's getting to be that embarrassing.

Hasn't it dawned on them - yet - what a laughing stock they've made of themselves... no? then their PR company should be sacked very soon indeed...

Come an election the Lib Dems will get a mauling but I wonder if they're bright enough to realise it - after all they have always been 3rd behind the Tories and Labour, so getting third place again probably won't even be noticed.

Why would anybody vote for a party that ditches it's promises and it's principles as soon as it's offered a a bit of power.
Clegg, Cable, Huhne, Alexander all of them liars and willing to jump into bed with anyone to hang on to a little power.
I will never trust them again, now will I ever vote for or trust the Tories or Labour....all liars and cheats.

time, maybe, for a new political party

all you need is for a few good men to do nthing and you eend up with a load of crappy politicians

Unfortunately there are people that say " I have voted this way all my life " and don't ever change ,even though parties polices seem to change at the drop of a hat ( even if by some miricale they do decide to keep them) we should dissolve the main three ( well two )parties, and they should not be allowed to have any place or influence in the running of our country ,a party should be formed of 'real' people who have an intrest in how we can live ,work and prosper as a nation

They have got to blame someone...It can't be that their leader is a two faced liar...or that he is weak and has not got the bottle to stand up to Cameron...If people vote Lib Dem they are wasting their vote

Agreed, but what we all have to decide is whether to go for the Lettuce or Leech. When you think of it like that the Lettuce at least can sustain you while the Leech will simply drain you dry.
02:30 PM on 03/09/2012
Of course it's the voters fault...for being daft enough to think that we had any 1 party in this country who actually did what the people wanted ! Keeping big busines happy seems to be the only thing they're interested in . Lost you're job ? , can't make ends meet ? , tough !... Just remember....
we're all in this together so Osborne says. That should comfort us all , I'm sure. Have we really progressed from Victorian times when the rich exploited the rest ?

Just count yourself lucky that you haven't worked for 41 years and suffered a work injury working for the government that makes you unfit for work when you're 62. Then you discover that you don't even receive benefits such as medical retirement because medical retirement is a government department whim - meaning that it's only given to those whose face fits. Unsurprisingly most of us are not included! Don't even start me on trying to get Disability Living Allowance (DLA) because the hoops they force you to jump when you can hardly walk seems to me to be about kicking a man when he's down!
02:16 PM on 03/09/2012
This time next year they will be a Party in bits, with defections to the Right and Left. Laughing stocks.
02:09 PM on 03/09/2012
So waste of space Nick Clegg is basically saying that the reason so many of the governments policies are crap is because the Lib Dems made sure of it by contributing 75% of the design of them, and he wants people to vote for them! Bet Callme Dave cant stop laughing!
