Eric Joyce In Court

Former Labour MP Eric Joyce has avoided jail after admitting going berserk during a House of Commons brawl.

Joyce pleaded guilty to four charges of assault at Westminster Magistrates Court on Friday morning and was given a 12-month community order rather than a prison sentence.

The 51-year-old admitted assaulting four politicians in MPs' watering-hole the Strangers Bar in February this year.

He was also fined £3,000 by the magistrate and ordered to pay £350 to each of his victims.

Prosecutor Zoe Martin told the court the MP told police "you can't touch me, I'm an MP" as they tried to restrain him.

The former army major was arrested after head-butting Tory MP Stuart Andrew, Labour whip Phillip Wilson and Tory councillors, Luke Mackenzie and Ben Maney.

Joyce, who represents Falkirk, was suspended from the Labour party following the incident.

The judge's decision not to hand down a custodial sentence of over 12 months means Joyce can still remain as the MP for Falkirk.

He has previously indicated that he wishes to remain an MP until the next general election.

The government plans to change the law to ensure politicians who go to prison for under a year will be subject to an automatic recall election.

This sentence is probably worth about £120,000 in wages and expenses, so of course he won't resign he is probably writing out a cheque to you know who right now, but we won't JUDGE him eh!

It's the old school tie, Judges, MP's, Bankers, are all corrupt and always look after each other. So why are we so surprised when sentences like this one are handed down.

The Huff Post have not reported the most appropriate comment of Eric Joyce: the bar "was full of f'in tories".
Acquaint their heads with the pavement Eric!

Britains Political buffooons.

When thet are not robbing expenses they are getting away with assult or drinking too much.
They dont seem to be able to behave in a responsible way. There should be a curfew for them and they should be referred to social sevices, given ASBOs or community service.

Inept politicians do we need 650 of them each costing 1,500,000 per year.

Why is this man not made an example of?????????????????????????

Ok, the man pleaded guilty, but if he had been an "ordinary" person, he would have been off to the nick in quick sticks. This again shows how the elites in this country, have one law for them, and another for us "ordinary" mugs. It just shows how unfair the whole justice system is, and how it is weighted against us "ordinary" people!!

OK Huff-is this one going into room 101?

This sort of behaviour on the part of a Member of Parliament is out of order altogether. There have been some bad hats in the past, but to behave like a hooligan (drunk or not) as he did is totally reprehensible. He is supposed to be among the highest in the land that the rest of us peasants are supposed to look up to and respect. Yet, he may just as well be one of those out-of-control teenage rioters, but with even less excuse to behave badly. Drunkards who get aggressive are the worst of all. Heavy drinkers sometimes merely become morose and depressed. The aggressive ones have the most serious flaws in their characters and are dangerous as well.

If I headbutted someone at my place of work......

Not only that but try getting a job as a hospital porter or school caretaker with that on your CRB check? Still he is only an MP so thats ok.

The British justice system shows up the inequalities in sentencing. The rioter who broke a students jaw gets a long prison term , while the John Wayne of the Labour party gets off with a derisory sentence. Will he pay his fine out of his expenses ??????? He should have got the same sentence as the man who attacked the student. Privilege always saves the so called great and good from proper justice.

Labour fighting back at last!

Why does only a custodial sentence bar you from being an MP, he has been foung guilty of a crime surely that is enough. He is obviously not a fit person to be an MP although most of them are not bothered by a bit of fraud violence is another matter and should not be tolerated.

What a reflection on both the Labour party and the people of Falkirk. Both should be doing everything to get rid of this neanderthal yob.

That he announces that he has no intention of resigning as an MP is normal. None ofthem do unless absolutely forced to do so. Then he's on reasonably firm ground here, the last labour MP who lashed out at someone (in public) wound up a peerof the realm.
