Ofcom Investigates James Murdoch Over 'Fit And Proper' Test For BSkyB Licence

James Murdoch

An inquiry into whether James Murdoch and BSkyB are 'fit and proper' operators of a broadcasting licence has been stepped up by the media regulator Ofcom.

A Freedom of Information request by the Financial Times showed that Ofcom set up a team in January known as 'Project Apple' to investigate evidence of phone hacking and payments to public officials at News International, the newspaper company where James Murdoch was until recently executive chairman.

The investigation was started in the wake of fresh revelations which have emerged from the Leveson inquiry into media ethics, as well as police inquiries and select committees.

The team of seven or eight staff members is assessing whether News Corporation, which owns 39.1% of BSkyB, could have its licence revoked as a result of the allegations.

James Murdoch, who stepped down as executive chairman of News International last week, is still the head of BSkyB, having taken over from his father Rupert Murdoch in 2007 after four years as chief executive.

The move would likely force James Murdoch to step down as chairman, or result in News Corp cutting its stake in the broadcaster.

The FT's FOI request showed that Project Apple was discussed at an Ofcom board meeting on 24 January, and was also discussed in February at another meeting.

Ofcom, which has an ongoing responsibility to assess owners of broadcasting licences, said in July that it was "continuing to gather and analyse" information arising from the phone hacking inquiry.

who cares.

Obviously enough in then higher echelons of the establishment to commence this investigation.

I would suggest also many across the public spectrum also care very much about the undue influence of the Murdoch empire that has permeated our social fabric over the last three decades.

The 'who cares' attitude is what has led to the present sort of hierarchy running this once great nation.

More officiousness, and probably another whitewash before the backlash.

Shame the procedure isn't being applied to the whole Murdoch clan. Thirty years too late to change the damage they did but long overdue.

These people should not be allowed into the country as they are nothing but criminals, I wonder what Jeremy Hunt is feeling now knowing that he was prepared to give the licence to the Murdochs to run BSkyB

The whole case prompts a re-assessment of the limits we should impose on the freedom of the press. I went to a really interesting debate on the subject at HowThe LightGetsIn festival in Hay. You can watch in on the website: http://iai.tv/video/limits-to-liberty

What surprises me is that they need 7-8 staff members. Giving how much information is publicly available due to select committee hearings and the Lewinson inquiry I would have thought it would have been pretty straight forward to be able to come to a conclusion.

Begs the question .... how many special inquiries does it take in order to ......

How did the UK become so terrorized on the Murdochs ? It is incredible the amount of cowering that has gone on.

throw him out . . . he is not fit and proper to run BSkyB . . and reduce the murdoch's stake in it .. to zero

I find it still amazing why Murdoch has got away with inciting racial hatred in the UK in his papers and TV stations. He is not even a UK citizen and yet authorities have been afraid to hold him to account including our government. Subtle incitement of racial hatred taking every opportunity to mention Muslims when a crime is committed and yet never mention the faith of anyone else. This racist policy and blindly supporting Israel, never any mention of Israel's nukes Israel is no friend of the UK or the USA it only ever wants its own way.

I note the right wing lobbies are now taking control of UK politicians and media. We now have likes of Murdoch and lobbies controlling UK Government. And NOT the British people. Can we ask how these 100's of billions wasted on 3 wars and thieving bankers would have built up the economy of our great country? Murdoch should be held to account. Abuse is Abuse no matter how you hide it. Time of our Government to put the people of UK first. The debates on UK TV seem to have an agenda rather then open debates we use to have. Never a debate on Israel’s daily human rights abuses and its NUKES. I wonder why?

nasim...

this is NOT a defence of the Sun, Sky, or any other element of the Murdoch empire, hiowever I must point out to you, Islam and it;s Muslims is NOT a race, it IS a religion. the adherents to which come from many ethnic groups, white, brown, yellow, and mixed.

They hail from many parts of the world, not just one place; across Europe there are a few millions who are genetically white Caucasians, yet are Muslim, a large number of Chinese, Indonesian, African of a variety of ethnicity, Indian and Pakistani, from the sub continent, and of course Arabs and fraternal relatives, Iranians etc, not to forget Egyptians and others across the north of Africa.

So many different people it would be impossible to be 'racist' by simply picking on a person because of his/her religion.

You can criticise one for being anti Islam/Muslim if you wish, but just because one refuses to accept the veracity of what is spouted in the name of Allah, you cannot complain about racism under that.

The quicker you realise that the sooner we can debate the subject without name calling.

Dear Scouse

The point I am making is right wing media including Murdoch seems to be stooping to the same level of what a mad man did in WW2. trying to dehumanise a certain race because of their religion. The fact is Life is either right or wrong. I have no issues with guilty extremists Muslims being held to account. but then the punishment should be uniform of extremists of all other faiths too.

How can we all teach our children about right or wrong when we all are selective of how we all choose to protray half lies and deciet.

I note one fact of dehumanising Arabs and Muslims by the West and Israel. I note any loss of Israelie or Western life is always given a name and face and yet killing many Muslims including wiping whole villages out are simply numbers. True but sad. All forms of violence is wrong No Nukes for Iran then no nukes for Israel. Simple truth. lets not have double standards.. One world One law.No vetos, Real truth may be unpleasent but UK and our FCO now being run by the Whitehouse and the Kennesitt and NOT by the people of the UK

If the result is to shake the Murdochs out of Sky, well and good, but as well as revoking the licence for what has possibly been done in regards commercial good/bad behaviour, maybe the whole charging structure for Sky services could be looked at.

Sky gets paid by the advertising industry, which means you and I through our purchase of goods, it then demands we pay to receive their broadcasting, which effectively means we pay all over again.

If Sky cannot provide it's programming for a nominal sum, then why is it being allowed to screw the customer base in the manner as at present.

No wonder Murdoch wanted to get his hooks into the BBC, for which I am happy to pay £145 a year, for the benefit of no commercial advertising, but why should I then pay anything between 240 and 600 quid per year, just so Sky can, in effect, pay footballers et al 50,000 per WEEK to appear on the TV screen. Most other sport has been affected in some way, some more than others.
Let's be very honest here, Sky has corrupted the whole sporting scene with it's money. It's time this outfit was brought to some sort of account for it's commercial ventures into aspects of our lives that rationally we could well do without.

AIUI Sky also gets paid ten million by the BBC for the privilege of illegally broadcasting their program's all over W Europe and making billions from the deal. And you say he is trying to gt his hooks into Auntie? Why upset a nice little earner?

Well, maybe the time has actually come for these Ozzies to get lost.

It will be interesting to see what the Yanks have in store for them, once the investigations over there are completed.

I don't get the bit about 'illegally' broadcasting BBC programmes across Europe, maybe you can explain.

Could it be greed do you think, or is it power? Could it be both? This family needs to be brought down a peg or two million!

We have been played like small fish, by this family, and they have been allowed to get away with it by our illustrious leaders!

We need to shake up this country, and get soemone in power who has OUR interests at heart.

Or am I dreaming, and do flying pigs exist?.

Its me Huff, going to censor me again?

As long as there are few prepared to get stuck into our political system with the intention of clearing out the rubbish and partisan nonsense, we will be seeing flying pigs before the whole sorry mess gets cleaned up.

On the other hand, if enough people will get behind me, I will be quite willing to structure a new movement based entirely on spending the tax take on matters that are essential to our people.

One does not have to be Tory, Lib, labour or any other specified group to run then UK PLC.

If it needs it, prioritise it, and spend according to ones purse. Simple enough as I see it.

Clearly Murdoch hasn't offered them enough just yet.
