Solar Storm Passes Earth Without Incident - PHOTOS, VIDEO

A massive solar storm that could have shut down Earth's communications systems hit the planet's magnetic field yesterday, largely without damage.

"The freight train has gone by, and is still going by, and now we're just watching for how this is all going to shake out," said Joseph Kunches, a scientist with US weather agency Noaa, according to the BBC.

The coronial mass ejection was released as the sun nears the peak of its 11-year storm cycle. The cycle will peak in 2013/2014, and then trough again.

The leading edge of the coronal mass ejection reached Nasa's Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) satellite at 5:42am New York Time yesterday.

ACE, which is just outside Earth's magnetosphere, then communicated with instruments on Earth which could then measure the storm.

Nasa's latest release says that the 8 March storm was considered minor - a G1 on a scale of G1 to G5.

The mild effects of the storm naturally did not stop doomsayers taking to Twitter and Facebook to express their end-of-days theories.

@Satan wrote "do you like my solar storm?". @SaintRPh wrote "Giant Solar Storm Races towards Earth posttrib.suntimes.com/news/11126612-… Yay another Crisis for Obama to Milk! #headdesk". @CapesandCloaks "Biggest solar storm in five years is now hitting Earth. THE SUN IS HERE, EVERYBODY PANIC HIDE THE FREAKIN KIDS !!! Now wheres my sunblock?"

The storm produced magnificent displays of the northern lights, which you can see in the slideshow below.

But didnt you say it would create chaos??
09:22 AM on 03/10/2012
This happens all the time has always disrupted shortwave reception, it has to be remembered this is an American generated story & they panic it you say BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
09:20 AM on 03/10/2012
This happens all the time, but then again the Americans panic at the least this.
08:03 AM on 03/10/2012
Yet more panic-generating that turned into nothing. It is getting pathetic the way that organisations and media are so scared of failing to predict a "disaster", that they have now decided to inflate every little thing into "potential" disaster.
What's next? Are they going to start agreeing with the Mayans - "just in case" it turns out they were right all along? It seems to me that too many "agencies" have a vested interest in furthing their existence by continually generating these scares.
This "massive solar flare", which we were told could wipe out technology, turned out to be something that mother-earth deals with every 11 years on a continuing cycle ........ and has done for millennia. Anybody remember the 2001 or 1990 solar-peak? No, me neither!
Instead of spending billions on monitoring actual disasters while they're happening, do something useful like working out how to predict them BEFORE they happen. Eathquake, tsunami, tornado - billions spent on "monitoring" and "studying" and what's the result - every single one takes us by surprise!

You are so right, the biggest vested interest industry is global warming, too many people depend on it for their livlihoods for it ever to go away. It hasn't happened and it isn't happening, the arctic ice cap comes and goes as usual, the antarctic ice cap is actually bigger than "normal". There is too much information around and too many people with an angle on that information manipulating it, every disaster is linked to some theory. Don't get me wrong I like information, I like checking the ice caps every day and the earthquakes, the US hurricane centre website - which reminds me I have to email them to ask when they are going to toss the coin about the next hurricanes season. Predicting earthquakes is very tricky, I actually predicted the one in Italy the day before, but I have since predicted others which just haven't happened. I will say this though, the west coast of the USA is due a big one.

So pretty much as expected by 99.999% of the world's population. The other 0.001% work for Huff, AOL or both.

Presumably this is the one AOL spent all last week saying what disasters there would be?

A pleasant change from volcanic ash. Can we now expect extinction of vegetation by migrating locusts?

Wonder what dirty Tory deeds we missed yesterday because AOL was too busy with this oh-so important headline.
07:49 AM on 03/10/2012
I wonder what Labour dirty deeds we miss because you and the media are busy attacking the government. Remember all the filth your lot generated? Oh, of course, you have conveniently short memories.

I can’t remember, what filth was it?
11:30 AM on 03/09/2012
No effects? I beg to differ.... I was awakened from my mid-morning daydream by a terrific cramp in both legs, followed by a nose-bleed. Shortly afterwards my hair caught fire. Bloody solar storm!
01:39 PM on 03/09/2012
....and how did the dream end??
11:19 AM on 03/09/2012
Yesterday the story was all doom and gloom because SatNav, Aeroplane Nav systems and Computers were going to be knocked out and cause chaos around the world!!!

YEAH RIGHT!!!
11:16 AM on 03/09/2012
Oh Dear Oh dear Yesterday the Huff and AOL made out that this could be the ned of the World.
