Lorraine Kelly lost three pints of blood last month after a horse threw her to the ground and trod on her with an iron-clad hoof.

In her first interview since the accident, the ITV Breakfast presenter told her stand-in, Nadia Sawalha, that she had undergone a blood transfusion and is still taking strong painkillers.

The 52-year-old is out of hospital and is being looked after by her husband Steve at home in Scotland but she does not know when she will be able to return to work.

It was Lorraine's second ever riding lesson at Chessington Equestrian Centre in Surrey as part of preparations for an event run by Sarah Brown's charity PiggyBankKids.

She told Nadia she had tried a jump but was not experienced enough to get the horse to do it.

She said: "I fell off and, sadly, he trampled on my thigh. My leg was in a bit of a state. Imagine a big horse with an iron-clad hoof, it's almost like a weapon."

I find it hard to believe that a riding yard would allow such an inexperienced person to jump after two lessons. It takes experience, balance and basically learning to ride properly before anyone should negotiate jumping. Sadly these celebs are so far up their own arses think that they can do anything. I just hope that the poor horse is okay!

My mate was run over by a runaway jcb and had five pints of blood he was back at work within a fortnight. Didn't sell his story to the papers either. Stupid woman should never be allowed in the saddle again. I remember when she was with border tv she was an obnoxious pillock who when you met her gave the impresion you were less than her. Folk in the area called her smelly kelly. Allegedly because her personal hygeine was not great.

Do you know what? Lots of us spend many hours learning to actually ride a horse before trying to jump. Her 2nd lesson? What was her instructor thinking?? Surely not a BHS qualified instructor? If som why was she jumping? If not why was she being taught by someone unqualified??

I asked in a earlyer post what about the horse? Sorry I reread the story and I see she had to have 4 pints of blood. All's well that ends well.

So far a lot of nasty comments about Lorraine and not one word of sympathy. Get well soon and ignore all the bad mouthers.

My son who is an Air Con Engineer met LK in London where he was working and said she's just as nice as she is on TV. I wish her well x

prof nutt was right, horse riding is more dangerous than taking ecstasy.
11:32 AM on 03/11/2012
Well i suppose an ecstasy tablet falling on you would no where near as dangerous as a horse!

Why would anyone try a jump if not an experienced horse rider, and why was she even allowed to attempt it ????????????????????
10:41 AM on 03/11/2012
Exactly, second lesson I feel a large compensation claim coming here if this is true, but we won't get to hear about that though will we,

It's most unlikely. The most you do is go over poles on the floor and until you can at least trot properly you don't do that either. Next is cavaletti. Two cross shaped pieces of wood with a wood stretcher. They don't go more than a foot and a half above the ground and are mostly taken at a trot too.

When will people realise that riding is such a dangerous sport? It takes years and years to be able to ride properly and even then as everyone must have seen you still come off.

I trained to assistant instructor level to improve my riding and I've been riding for a long long time and owned horses for years. Someone above said she is exaggerating, she is unless the instructor was totally irresponsible. She wouldn't have been put on a horse of any size as she is only small anyway. Still hurts if they trample you though.

People come off every day and there isn't this song and dance. At her age it's hard to start from scratch the bones and joints don't like it.When you fall as you get older you don't bounce any more either. You go splat. Getting hurt goes along with the sport. Get over it or don't do it.

People are having accidents every day, why is hers supposed to be of any interest to all of us. We have been getting along quite well without her. She is not that important.
