Bee Gees star Robin Gibb believes his battle with cancer and the death of two of his brothers could be a form of payback for the global fame and fortune his family has enjoyed.

The singer, 62, said he could be paying a "karmic price" for the success of the hit group after being diagnosed with colon and liver cancer.

His twin brother Maurice died after suffering a heart attack during stomach surgery in 2003, while his younger sibling Andy, who was also a pop star, died in 1988 at he age of 30.

Speaking to The Sun he said: "I sometimes wonder if all the tragedies my family has suffered, like Andy and Maurice dying so young and everything that's happened to me recently, is a kind of karmic price we are paying for all the fame and fortune we've had. But we've worked hard for everything we've achieved."

The Stayin' Alive star, who is currently in remission after collapsing with the illness in 2010, insisted he has never been at "death's door" but said the disease had convinced him to make the most of the time he has left.

"The illness, and the untimely death of my brothers, has made me conscious of the fact that - rather than just think about it - it's crucial that you do today what you want to do," he said

"I've got a sense of urgency about life, rather than withdrawing from it and feeling depressed.

"Now I know how precious time is, and that you can't put it in the bank. So I intend to make the most of every single second of it that I've got left."

For those who say that in Robins case, cancer is heriditary, Andy, the youngest brother didn't die from cancer; he had myocarditis - an inflamed heart brought about by a viral infection.

Yes, probably misquoted, but if it's true, I think he's being a bit hard on himself.

what a awful thing to happen to anyone, if this is his way of dealing with things then so be it ...............
16:52 on 11/03/2012
what a dreadful thing to say... not only does this suggests that people with cancer have 'gotten what they deserve', it also suggests that if you work hard and do well at something, resulting in financial good fortune, you somehow deserve to be subjected to a life threatening illness.... what a strange outlook on life he must have. I really hope this is, in truth, bad reporting and that he has said something that has been completely mis represented!

Cancer isnt Karma, if it was then a lot of very bad people would have disappeared a long time ago. It is an action of nature, one that we will eventually overcome completely. All we hope for is that steady progress in eliminating/controlling the various types continues successfully.

There are loads of people struggling with this disease - and worse - who do not have the fame, money and family this guy has. Instead of concentrating on the one bad thing in his life I wonder if he thinks of how lucky he is to have fame, money and a great family/

I have found that the people you think would cope, simply cannot ..............yet the ones who dread something like this, have their emotions completely under control and shock everyone !..........
unfortunately, we can never second guess how anyone will act until they are given the bare facts bluntly.

What goes around comes around. Karma is kind of real. I don't like the word 'karma' but we are stuck with it.

Rubbish! If only this was true the world would be this fabulous place where people get what they deserve. They don't. Accept it.

Total nonsense. Learn science instead of hocus-pocus and you'll get a lot further in life.

Possibly just genetics, but, life does have a certain system of balance and control, if it did not, then the seas would be covered in algae and the skies full of birds etc. I often question natural disaster and disease as to whether it is truly natural, or the planets own defence system. One things for certain, disaster and disease do not discriminate, that is something of a lottery.

I can think of a lot of successful people who "deserved" karmic payback more than the Gibb family. Still, making the most of whatever time one has can only be a good thing for all concerned.
