Will Young fears Rihanna is not a good role model for young girls because her sexually-charged videos and raunchy lyrics are "not empowering".

The singer concedes the Umbrella hitmaker is a "brilliant pop star", but he worries that her impressionable young fans will grow up with a negative perception of female sexuality.

He tells Yahoo's OMG: "I don't think Rihanna is a massively great role model for women, her lyrics aren't empowering. She's a brilliant pop star and recording artist but her lyrics are not empowering - young girls have to listen to those lyrics...

"I saw Rihanna kissing a girl in one of her videos (S&M) and I thought, 'Who is this for? If you're going to do it just go the whole way like Madonna did and have sex on a bed'. Women in a patriarchal society should be empowering and owning their bodies; I don't think Rihanna is. I feel quite strongly about this."

However, Young is full of praise for other female singers such as Lady Gaga and Adele, adding, "I'm more interested in female pop stars that are empowering for women as a feminist myself. You can sexualize yourself in an empowering way. Adele doesn't sexualize herself yet she's very open about her heartache.

"Image-wise Lady Gaga is empowering. I'm more interested in women like Annie Lennox or Grace Jones - people who have challenged the female form, who have owned it and brought it forward."

well if that's the case you are talking about the whole music industry not just her. What about these rappers that degrade women, you can't put that all on her. These rappers talk about the same things over and over money, sex, and drugs i guess they won't speak about that though. Face it there is barely any positive music out there anymore the radio puts out what is hot and the positive role models are out the window.

Rihanna is simply a product, an employee, and is paid to be the type of performer she is. Is that good or bad? Depends on your viewpoint but just think of the new jeans advert she is in. Full of sexual implications and Rihanna showing off her assets, to some extent. I dont recall actually seeing any jeans? What did the ad have to do with them? Not Rihannas fault, but the fault of the advertisers, promoters who created it, and the owners of the product who clearly agreed to that nonsense.

absolutely agree - if she wants to be a stripper or hooker or lapdancer that is up to her. I think she has a very promising career ahead of her in the porn industry (once her looks fade and she is too old to sing the songs that her record company writes for her)

So it's ok for gaga to promote openly bisexual feelings in her songs/videos? Get a grip will. Gaga is far from a decent role model. I have no problems with ANY sexual orientation, but less of the double standards young man. There are very few good role models in modern pop music. Modern pop is designed to placate any real feelings of true expression and replace it with dross and product placement.

A good female role model would be someone who is pursuing her dreams with courage and not succumbing to selling her sexuality. Women should see that they can make it with what is inside and not have to lower themselves to ultimately just be another sexy body for sale. Sell your voice and your talent Rihanna and keep your dignity.

Will Young has a comment about everyone.He slags off the very show that made him famous.He slates off talent shows yet he was found on one. He had some good music out but he never hit the same heights as Rhianna and I think he might be a tad jealous.
So she might make mistakes,don't we all?.
Every generation has emulated pop stars in one way or another.
Were David Bowie/Roy Wizzard/Ozzy Osbourne good role models?No but so what?
Madonna kissed men and women in her videos and I didn't turn out gay because of it so zip it Will your jealousy is boring.
