Stephen Lawrence Family To Call For Police Inquiry To Be Re-Opened

The family of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence will this week write to the Home Secretary to call for an inquiry into police wrongdoing to be reopened in light of fresh allegations of corruption.

It is alleged a Scotland Yard officer, who interviewed the suspects following the killing, had links to one of their fathers, a gangster.

Detective Sergeant John Davidson is said to have had close ties to Clifford Norris, whose son David Norris was arrested in the weeks after the 1993 racist attack.

Norris was convicted along with Gary Dobson in January this year of murder - 19 years after the crime - and both were sentenced to life at the Old Bailey.

Norris was told he must serve at least 14 years and three months, while Dobson was given a minimum jail term of 15 years and two months.

It is believed the pair had three or four accomplices, who remain at large.

Imran Khan, the Lawrence family solicitor, said: "Over the last few days we have had revelations that corruption may have infected the initial investigation into the murder of Stephen Lawrence."

He said it was unsuitable for the police or the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) to investigate the issue, and called for The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry to be reconvened.

The subsequent Macpherson Report in February 1999 made 70 recommendations, many aimed at the institutionalised racism throughout the Metropolitan Police.

"The only way that we can move this forward is for the Home Secretary to reconvene the original inquiry, which couldn't deal with the issue of corruption back then because it didn't have the material on which to consider it," Mr Khan said.

"The idea is for that to be looked into, not simply to root out corruption and to get to the bottom of it, but also it may have an impact on opening up lines of inquiry on the remaining individuals who are said to be responsible for Stephen's murder."

The announcement was yesterday made after a screening of a BBC Panorama special, Stephen Lawrence: A Time For Justice.

Doreen Lawrence, Stephen's mother, and Stuart Lawrence, his brother answered questions after the hour-long documentary, which followed the family for the year up to Norris and Dobson's trial.

Mrs Lawrence told the audience at Bafta in Piccadilly in central London: "I think what came out this week has just proven what we have said for years.

"There had to be something. And what I couldn't understand was why Stephen, why his murder, was so difficult to solve. What was behind it all?

"And then when you hear about the relationship between the police and David Norris's father, then you begin to understand some of that."

Asked if she felt closure, Mrs Lawrence said: "I think closure's still a little bit out there for me.

"There's only two (in jail), so we've only had partial justice.

"I'm still trying to come to terms with the fact that we've got two behind bars."

Mr Khan said the link between DS Davidson and Norris was "only one part of it", and that he believed there was "more below the surface".

"The police haven't disclosed that material to the family, we don't know the breadth of it or the depth of it," he said.

"And what we want the inquiry to do, if it is ordered by the Home Secretary is to see whether there were malign influences at the time which stopped, for example, people coming forward as witnesses."

After 18 years the chances of finding any concrete evidence to convict anyone of Stephen's murder is almost nil. The police have done their best and should now stop chasing a lost cause. The Lawrence family and their lawyers must realise that the police have other things to attend to and that they are not the only ones who have have been wronged.
I feel that Gary Dobson and David Norris were convicted on the flimsiest of evidence just to try and quieten those baying for revenge.

This needs to stop now.The police have been investigated, an inquiry has taken place and the Mets actions have been investigated by other forces, recommendations made and convictions sought and achieved. The police did not kill Stephen Lawrence and now is the time to stop this never ending witch hunt

The Lawrence family declared from the very beginning that they would not rest until all those involved in the son's murder were brought to justice.

Put yourselves in their shoes - wouldn't you do the same for a son of yours? I know I would...

A lot of talk this morning concerning cost - in a civilised society, we should and do expend public money for many things, and justice and bringing people to trial is part of that process.

I would like to think we live in a civilised society where justice is available to all - and I for one am sanguine about money being spent on justice and the pursuit of criminals.

There should be no 'time limit' on criminal activity, and the Lawrence family is quite right to raise this issue - I wish them well...

I think this issue has long ago ceased to be an inquiry and is now a full blown industry. It is history and I think we have learnt many lesons from it but I doubt we can put trust in any further evidence which can be uncovered. We must at some point say enough is enough, we acknowledge past failings but it's time to move on and try not to repeat them.

Doreen Lawrence said,"The Government does nothing to tackle racism".When we think clearly about this, she's right,so the Government should deport all those racists back to the cess-pits where they originated from !

...and what do you suggest we do with the indigenous racists, all too prevalent in today's society? Where do you send them back to..??

I have already stated where to send them back to: If not all, then most of them.Unfortunately, some we can't,but if a dog is born in a stable.it does't make it a horse.
As far as your response on Dobson and Norris, "Believe in facts and evidence".
Since when has circumstantial evidence been a fact ? The circustantial evidence relating to the tiny speck of blood, was contamination due to neglect of the police when it was mixed up with other bloodstained items in the same bag..OBVIOUSLY,YOU'RE BIAS.YOU SHOULD LEARN TO STUDY TRUE FACTS,AND NOT SURMISE AND ASSUMPTIONS

For goodness sake, just when are we going to see this story come to an end and they let Stephen Lawrence rest in peace. They've had the trial and guilty verdicts, that's all any citizen can expect and justice has been done. If I ever see another picture of Stephen Lawrence in the media, it will be one too many.

Anyone remember Ross Parker? Didn't think so. Try Googling his name with 1984. Having deleted a perfectly respectful post it appears that Huff mods are against his memory being held.

Does this woman run the country now. She seems to crop up everywhere demandjng this. that and the other and every politician seems desperatecto be photographed with her. The country has beat itself up for too long now and I wonder if the convictions were safe.

Like many others, I have just about had enough of this case cropping up over and over again. I am sure that, no matter what action was taken by the Met or the Home Office, the family will never be satisfied with any outcome - no matter what that may be.

I think that they have now reached the stage where all they seem to want to do is keep the matter constantly in the public eye - hard as it may be to accept the situation, for the family, I don't think there is anymore to be gained from blaming the police or suggesting wide scale corruption. There is mileage in prosecuting the other offenders but if valuable time and resources are wasted fighting accusations of police ineffectiveness, there will be no resources left to catch the killers. Let the Police get on with trying to convict the rest of the gang who are currently unconvicted.

Rather than see this case reopened and in all likelyhood many others costing the country million without any clear conclusionss, perhaps we should put rules and laws in place that insist upon a judicial review of the way our police force currently operates in these cases. I am sure the vast majority of policemenn are truely honest and officient people but as in any organisation one bad apple tains the barrel.

this case is over 12 years old and as tragic as it was for the family who lost there son, i think its being milked to death by the press and now calls for the case to be re-opened and solicitors rubbing there hands in glee wityh the prospect of representing the lawrence family. There has been hundreds of awful deaths and murders since the lawrence case and they have quitely come and gone without vast amounts of ridiculous publicity!!, How much of this is to do with racial harmony, IT WAS NOT THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY!! do the families of murdered girls and the elderly get all this media coverage ....no they dont, whole thing beggers belief , but does,nt surprise me, GREAT BRITAIN 2012, it stinks
