Dangerous Criminals On The Run To Be Named Online

Hundreds of dangerous criminals on the run will be named under plans being considered by the government.

A list of offenders who have gone missing after being recalled to prison while free on licence will be published online.

The scheme is expected to focus on the most serious offenders, such as murderers and rapists.

Policing and Criminal Justice Minister Nick Herbert will write to all chief constables in England and Wales about the scheme today.

In the letter, he wrote: "Currently we do not disclose the individual identity of offenders who are unlawfully at large.

"Ministers have taken the decision that in future there will be a presumption that the identity of prisoners unlawfully at large should be disclosed unless there are sound operational reasons for not doing so."

Almost 1,000 prisoners, including 15 murderers and 10 rapists, recalled to custody before last October had not been returned by the end of the year, the latest Ministry of Justice figures showed.

A total of 119 violent attackers and 34 sex offenders are also missing, along with some 213 drug offenders, 131 burglars and 103 robbers.
