Drought Set To Spread Across Britain, Environment Agency Warns

Sever Drought

PA/Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 12/03/2012 13:12 Updated: 12/03/2012 13:12

Drought is set to spread to more areas of the country if dry weather continues this spring, the Environment Agency has warned.

Well-above average rainfall is needed in March and April to ensure water levels recover in southern, eastern and central England, but the chances of receiving sufficient rain in the coming weeks are very low.

As a result, the Environment Agency warned it was anticipating a "severe drought" this spring and summer in parts of England.

All of East Anglia and the South East are already officially in drought after two very dry winters. Parts of eastern England have been drought-stricken since last summer.

A new report from the Environment Agency warns drought could spread as far north as East Yorkshire and as far west as the Hampshire-Wiltshire border if the dry weather continues.

The study says significant recharge of groundwater supplies in drought-affected areas is now unlikely before warmer weather and the spring growing season reduce the amount of water going back into the ground.

Even with a fifth more rain than normally received over the summer, many aquifers could still be well below normal levels over the coming months.

While the rain in early March was welcome, it has not reversed the impact of two consecutively dry winters, the Environment Agency said.

Levels of rainfall well above average are needed in March and April to fully restore the situation in eastern and southern England and some central areas, but the Met Office has warned the chances of receiving enough rain is low.

The latest weather forecasts suggests mild and dry weather will continue for the next few days, and in southern parts the warm and dry conditions could persist into April.

The Environment Agency drought prospects report warns fruit, vegetable and salad growers in the southern and eastern parts of England could be hit by a lack of water, while livestock farmers - who are already facing high costs of forage - could also be affected.

Wildlife such as fish, rare amphibians including natterjack toads and other plant and animal species which rely on rivers, ponds and wetlands may be lost from some sites, pollution incidents will be more damaging and forest fires are more likely.

Some individual power stations which need water for cooling may be affected by water restrictions, although this should not have an impact on the grid as a whole, while water-intensive companies such as concrete producers may also be hit.

And boating on the Oxford and Grand Union Canal could be restricted during the main boating season between April and October. Water levels on the Kennet and Avon Canal could be at risk.

Lord (Chris) Smith, chairman of the Environment Agency, said: "We are working with businesses, farmers and water companies to meet the challenges of a continued drought.

"Our report urges water companies, farmers and businesses to look again at ways to improve short-term water storage, share water resources where possible and reduce the amount they and their customers use.

"A prolonged drought will have long term impacts on wildlife and habitats. The Environment Agency is actively monitoring the environmental impact of the drought and will take action to mitigate these impacts wherever possible."

I watched a programe on tv about this, apparently 60% off the water in reservoirs goes to power stations, 20% down burst pipes and the rest go to us and farmers. Not a lot do we get. So in this climate should'nt we have more wind and sea turbines and less power stations thus then there will be less co2 emissions going into our skys. More Solar Farms using the sun to make energy. Thus the reservoirs will fill up and not our water bills. Also bearing in mind if farmers cant water their plants our FOOD BILLS GOES UP ASWELL. In this current climate its a no win situation. We need to change the way we get electricity before its far too late for us ALL>

Why is there a water shortage and hose pipe ban. Eh the Olympic swimming pools holds
2,500,000 litres. Where did this water come from. Out off the sky -- dont think so. Our reservoirs.
Thats why we have to save our water. They have it. And I bet they were not on a water meter.

Also last drought we were told to save water. So alot off us got Water Butts and watering our gardens. We are in fact stopping rain water going back down the drains, into water treatment plants and back into reservoirs and rivers. Next thing they will ban water butts.

ok so the government want to rip up protected land all over the country to build thousands of ticky tacky estates to cope with the imigrant population regenerate the building industry and give the councils more income from council tax ,they just forgot that all of these estates require water
and when was the last time you saw a water company put in a new reservoir ,in these days of comprehensive studies who is responsable for the water study and then who is responsable for overiding the study ? = no one of course this is England, just tick the boxes to get it done and give them a hose pipe ban !

Piping water from scotland to the south = to expensive =10 times more expensive than building a desalination plant in the south ,this was said by a spokesman for a water company !

So apart from doubling the water bills just what are the water companies going to do ?
They say its to expensive to pipe it from the north and its to expensive to build a desalination plant so apart from sticking the money in their pockets just what are they going to do with the 40% hike in the revenue ?

When was the last time you saw a water company put in a new resevoir = never ,you would have thought that with the government shouting about planet warming /climate change that someone at the water company would have put plans into action to store more water but hey this is England !

The solution to the supply of water in the UK is to build a network of pipelines interconnecting all existing systems. Then water can be transferred from abundant areas to areas where there is no water. End of problem. Any argument about cost is irrelevant. You have to factor in the savings caused by no more water problem. Just do it!

dig a deep hole in the garden, tin shed over the top, save all that water being flushed away, give up drinking water, millions of gallons saved, don't grow any fruit& veg or flowers, buy the ones from Spain where there is no water shortage

So, boating on the Oxford and Grand Union Canal could be restricted during the main boating season between April and October, well perhaps Call me Dave, Boris the Oaf and Cleggy the Liar could come up here to the North West and try out the Manchester and Salford Canal , There `s so much water up here I am astonished that they're not hatching a plot to steal it or pipe it to the South East.

Can you spare just £2 a month for Water Aid?... help those parched children in Norfolk.
06:10 PM on 03/12/2012
The basic rules of 'Supply & Demand' mean it's in the Water Company's best interests for there to be a water shortage.

The less water they can claim there is, the more they can charge for it.

Thank you maggie thatcher!! you privatised the water comapanies...now the population pays the price !The Uk is doomed to extinction as we know it...because the citizens havent got the balls to stand up to these powerful companies who have been nurtured by crooked politicians like maggie for decades!
Soon we will have no oil...as scots want independance, water will have to be piped from loch ness, labour will be from the sub continent, and we will have rulers like tony pillock blair ruling over illiterate, immigrant population ! 'GREAT' BRITTAIN...becomes ' lil india' !

Spot on

Could'nt put it better my self. If we got rid off the immigrant population, there would be enough homes so we would not have to build any more. more jobs to get unemployment down. places in schools for our children doctors surgerys where we could get appointment when we want them.
Less crime less un insured drivers who dont understand english as they put it. And more money in the state for those who need it, those who have fought in our wars. Those who have paid NIS all their working lives and a decent pension for OUR Elderly. We would then have more water, less rubbish in our landfilled sites and we British would be a lot happier. Our prisons are full. If we sent back all the immigrant population that are filling up our prisons there would be places for the criminal system to send our dangerous people too. Instead off letting them do community service and letting them go free. This country is a Total joke.

Solution is less people. Particularly in the South East of England. A cull may be needed starting with Politicians, Bankers, Accountants, Salesmen,PR pests, HR wastes of space and journalists.

You forgot celebrity cooks... and Jeremy Kyle
07:39 PM on 04/01/2012
And Immigrant population. And find a less expensive way off converting sea water for flushing down the toilets. They say the sea levels are rising. So let it rise to power energy, water for area's where we dont need to drink it. Sea salt to go towards gritting the roads in winter. The solution is ALL AROUND OUR ISLAND just needs a brain box to put it into action. As long as the north and south pole is melting, we will have alot off sea water..................

I notice that suddenly news of a drought has appeared, yipee I bet the climate change wallers can`t control themselves. I notice there is no mention of the fact that in the North West it hadn`t stopped raining for weeks!!
08:12 PM on 03/12/2012
Yeah... we get bleedin drowned and the Southerners want to have it piped down to them in the sunshine.
08:48 PM on 03/12/2012
If the governments over the past years had pulled their heads out of the sand and admitted that we could not sustain the massive increase in population, whether by immigration or children having children aka Jeremy Kyle! They would have at least built more reservois to cope. But No. As usual the only way out will be to increase the cost of water, funny how these things seem to be able to `put themselves right` if we pay.
Does the South not get water from the Lake District ? I`m sure I remember something about it in the bright and distant past!

Our sunshine is not going to last. I said this in January Winter is not giving up without a fight. Now on the news SNOW is coming. Yes I can save snow up my allotment in the water butt. Less carrying off water containers. Yes dont get me wrong I do love the sun, but we do need a lot more rain and I will tell you when it will come. Jubilee, Olympics.
thats when the south will get rain. The weather always changes after early June. Then we will be able to fill our reservoirs and then we will get flooding. But no one seems to know how to get floor water into the reserviors to store !!!!!!
