Gay Marriage: Ben & Jerry's Rename Ice Cream In Favour Of Government Plans

Huffington Post UK   Dina Rickman First Posted: 13/03/2012 12:32 GMT Updated: 31/01/2013 22:01 GMT

While bishops unite to bash gay marriage, Ben & Jerry's is offering an altogether more tasty form of support with their flavour- 'Apple-y ever after'.

The ice cream makers have clubbed together with gay rights charity Stonewall to campaign for marriage equality in Britain, renaming 'Oh! My! Apple Pie!' 'Apple-y ever after' in support of plans, which the government will consult upon next week, to legalise gay marriage.

Ben & Jerry's are also using Facebook and twitter to try and lobby support to give homosexuals the right to get married.

Stonewall's deputy CEO Laura Doughty said they were "moved" by their support for gay marriage. "All people want is to call their long-term relationship by the same name as everyone else. Our strong advice to those who disapprove of same-sex marriage is just not to get married to some-one of the same sex."

Ben & Jerry's campaign follows a similar move in America where they renamed flavour 'Chubby Hubby' to 'Hubby Hubby' to celebrate gay marriage being legalised in Vermont in 2009.

On Sunday Tony Blair, who has converted to Catholicism, came out in favour of gay marriage with the former prime minister telling friends he "strongly supports" the plans.

Prime Minister David Cameron has said he supports gay marriage because, not in spite of, the fact he is a Conservative.

I fully respect the right of any individual, be he/she politician or electrician, to hold personal opinions on any subject under the sun, including same-sex marriage, with no obligation to mollify anyone else.
I have never, for any reason, discriminated against anyone.

I do not, however, recognize the right of any political party nor trades union to construct and/or present an official attitude to matters of individual conscience. This is simply a Whip dishonestly applied to any subsequent vote in Parliament.

A politician, unlike an electrician, has a duty to look beyond his/her personal inclination and fully ascertain the facts appropriate to any vote he may cast.
For instance, does the pledge recently signed by the new Holyrood opposition leaders at the Equality Network junket include a commitment to marriage for bi-sexuals and transexuals, who are also represented by that body.? If so, the fact should be clearly and publicly stated. If not, why not?.

What is in the pipeline is Sex sans Frontieres, by hook or by crook.

I'd be happier if it wasn't the UK group Stonewall. Stonewall has a notorious anti transgender bias. If you go to their website, you'll see that they call themselves "the lesbian, gay and bisexual charity. Notice anything missing? I'm sorry, but its been LGB"T" for some time now. The fact that their not even willing to acknowledge trans people in their mission statement tells me something.

Frankly, I'm not sure what pisses me off more, the fact that a group that names itself after a riot that was started by transgender people doesn't even include them in their LGB charity, or the fact that an UK group takes it's name from a riot that happened in New York.

Only 2% of people regularly go to church. A lot more than that regularly eat ice-cream I'll bet - so B&J's are more relevant to the debate than the church.

Well done B&J - you're standing for decency rather than bigotry - you're a better moral compass than religions are (though that's not saying much!)

Did you know Vermont completely banned highway billboards, just so you can see the beautiful green mountains? That's one state that has their priorities set right.

I am so excited right now I can't even tell you. Apple Crumble was my favorite Ben & Jerry's flavor and they discontinued it so this is both a resurrection and GLORIOUS SALUTE to my gay brethren

All the people on here that now will never buy Ben and Jerry's are cracking me up, I am pretty sure they are not their target market anyway. Who wouldn't want to have a small change in the law to make others happy? I guess we have our own taliban.

If your still using a highly flawed work of man, "The Bible" or the teachings of other extremists to deny gay people their dignity, equality and humanity, come into the light.

Abandon the false teachings that separate you from friends and family. These people who are supporting gay equality and dignity get it and so can you.

Let go of the pride and hate the peddlers of the soul poison of bigotry in the name of god have poured into your ears.

Embrace love and acceptance. The sooner you do this, the better you will feel and the better humanity will be for it.

Speak no more about cherry picking passages from a book to justify fear, hate and intolerance.

We will not stone disobedient children to death.

The Earth is not the center of the universe and the sun does not revolve around it.

Likewise, gay people are not your enemies nor are they enemies of god.

Consider how much damage it does to another spirit and then consider the deep damage it does to your own spirit to deny another human being their dignity, love and equality all in the name of god.

Embrace love, tolerance and human dignity. You will feel better the sooner you do it.

Gay equality & dignity is coming.

Be on the loving side of history.
