Crypt School Twitter Bill
Crypt School Hands Pupils Legal Bill For Twitter Insults

Three people have been handed a legal bill for tweeting seemingly defamatory statements about a school and its staff.

Hundreds of tweets about The Crypt School in Gloucestershire were published by pupils past and present using the hashtag #controversialcryptmoments.

One pupil has since been suspended and three individuals, believed to be former pupils at the grammar school have been sent a letter demanding they pay the bill.

The all-boys institution sought advice from lawyers over the controversial comments on Twitter, according to local paper The Citizen.

One tweet accused a teacher of wanting two schoolboys to kiss in front of her while another called the school a "prison".

Richard James, chairman of the school's governors, said: "The board of governors of The Crypt School view the use of social media to insult, abuse, bully or defame a student, a member of staff or the school with the utmost seriousness.

"We will do whatever it takes to ensure people's reputations, and make sure people are not bullied in this way."

But there has since been outrage on the twittersphere over the schools actions with one student saying he had lost his vice-captaincy for tweeting on the thread. One Gloucester-based Twitter user tweeted:

Jeremy Anthon
Crypt never was one for taking a joke.

While another, @MattCainn, said: "Stuff we were all saying i'm not sure why those 3 specifically [received letters], i'm waiting for my letter haha".

Another government school, which has no idea how to do its job. Yet another example of why we need to get government out of out lives. Close this place down along with the rest and we can start to educate our children properly ourselves.

Bizarre. Maybe one or two of the twitterers had a point. If not a quiet and rational word would have been in order. To incur legal advice, which apparently failed to result in any action being taken in a court is not only wrong but an act of stupidity on the part of the school.

Where has Freedom of Speech gone ?
01:13 PM on 03/16/2012
What's 'Freedom of Speech'? Is it a concept of some sort? It's certainly not a legal phrase in this country that may imply any kind of right.

The school is showing itself to be a pathetic institution, had they dealt with it quietly no one would have heard... instead they try to illegally foist legal bills onto ex pupils. Shows the sort of thin skinned bullies running our schools these days, a teacher rises to head ship these days by political conniving and business networking, sad to say the day of the inspirational teachers is coming to an end, to be replaced by this sort of reptile.

So they went and got legal advice and then hand the bill to the kids , watch me hand it straight back. if they arnt taking you to civil court for defamation their legal bills are not your responsibility.

that said the kids should still be reprimanded for their conduct, discipline is so sorely lacking.

most schools do not listen to outside opinions from parents or students and they are oblivious to whats wrong wioth the education in this country..the education standard is woefull and many teachers use poor content that does not inspire or excite young people but they use content that they think is good when in fact its pathetic...i have seen content in schools that is very shallow in quality that bores me and i am 56yrs old

It is time the slander police checked out a scurrilous website called 'Rate My Teacher'.

Who writes and edits this drivel? The Crypt is not a fee paying independent school (i.e. 'school for elite toffs' and other such drivel).

The Crypt School is a grammar school with academy status for boys with a mixed Sixth Form.

It does not charge fees.

They try to... Legal fees at least...
06:29 PM on 03/23/2012
I'll think you'll find that Crypt is a fee paying independent school. It converted in late 2011.

I think you'll find you are incorrect.....

What a pathetic school. Do they send legal bills to kids who scribble on toilet walls and do they not have this thing called detention? It would be a rather odd school if the kids didn't play up a bit, any experienced teacher I'm sure would see the amusing side but act serious and give them a weeks detention.

The Crypt school is a state grammar school and not a "fee paying independent school"

I have taught in many tertiary colleges as a freelance teacher over the past 10 Years, I am sure there will have been photo's, and/or postings, about me on the social networking sites.
I never looked or sought to find out, and carried on tutoring in total ignorance of any comments.
If I had an issue with a pupil in one session, when they came back for a later session we carried on without any refrence to previous misdemeanors. I was fortunate and in my 60's so my carrer was mostly behind me. If you start reading comments you can start to believe them, so dont bother

Quite right. People have got to learn that Twitter, Facebook etc. etc. is not a free for all to slander, abuse, bully and offend whoever you want. It has to be used responsibly and with a little consideration.
