Schoolboy Rean Carter, 5, Gets His First Haircut (PICTURES)

Rean Carter

Five-year-old schoolboy Rean Carter has never had his hair cut since the day he was born.

The youngster's flaxen curls are so long they tumble below the line of his belt and must be tied up at school.

But his locks are set for the chop after Rean, sick of being mistaken for a girl, demanded a trip to the barber.

Heartbroken mother Leeanne Smith said the haircut would be sponsored for charity.

The 30-year-old, of Hylton Castle, Sunderland, said: "When Rean was born he had a lovely little curl of golden hair at the back of his head.

"I just could never bear to get it cut, not even his fringe.

"Now it flows all the way down his back to his bum and is very beautiful and soft.

"When we go out he is often mistaken for a little girl - people say 'Isn't she gorgeous' - but it has never bothered him; he just laughs.

"It was only when he joined school and had to have it tied back in a ponytail, for health and safety, that some of the other little boys began to make fun.

"They said he could not play with them because he looked like a girl.

"I've already cried at the thought of him having it cut, and will cry again when it actually happens."

The youngster has raised £82 in sponsorship for the stunt, from friends, relatives, and classmates in his reception class at Grange Park Primary school, in Sunderland.

The money will be donated to Sunderland Royal Hospital children's unit, where Ryan was admitted for a week-and-a-half in 2010, suffering from impetigo.

Mother-of-two Leeanne, who works as a party organiser for Ann Summers, said the shorn locks would then be donated to a cancer charity.

She and partner Neil Carter, 48, a painter and decorator, have never measured exactly how long the golden tresses are.

She said: "Rean gets his curly hair from Neil's side of the family.

"He said he wants it shorter, and spiky on top, like his friend Joseph.

"The barber will be under strict instructions not to take too much off. There will be no use of clippers.

"I've told him that he will have it cut by Easter or if not by then during the Easter holidays when he's off.

"I don't wish he was a little girl and I don't see him that way, though I would love a daughter.

"He is a proper little boy who likes Scooby Doo and cars and is getting into football.

"His little brother Regan, who is two, has the same hair. I'll let his grow and then when he gets to Rean's age we can auction his off too."

I like long hair on girls and boys. But when I was in school with long loose hair, I was told by my metal work teacher that I'd have to have it tied back, and I did so. That was in the days before H&S too. It's just common sense really. I think what we are seeing here is that this little lad, now he is in school, wants to be like his friends.

Health and safety? Why do people keep trotting out this nonsense phrase? It's almost as pathetic as our cattle-like attitude to handing our own children over to government indoctrination when they are 5 years old without question. Government education everyone?

@osmax I totally agree. Girls (and I say this only in relation to the health and safety aspect) have worn their hair long for centuries and it has never been a 'health and safety risk' until now. As recently as my school days I ran about with long hair and no one ever told me I had to tie it back in the interests of 'health and safety' and certainly by the time I was in my later primary school years I was quite capable of looking after my own personal safety on such minor levels. How on earth are today's kids going to learn to look after themselves if we keep wrapping them up in cotton wool?

Well five year old boys learn to look after themselves by not having hair so long it is going to be a tempting target for other kids to pull at ! Thanks be to God this boy has a great deal more sense than his mother.

He wants his cut. It's about him, not you mom, so get it cut today. Why make him wait? This kid is going to need major therapy, and not because of his hair, but because of his mother.
- She is crying of it (it's all about her)
- She wants him to look like a girl
- She named him like a girl (I think it's pronounced Ray-Ann, could be wrong maybe its an odd spelling of Ryan).
- He wants to look like a boy, and he wants his hair cut, and she says OK, but is delaying it

If it was the other way around and she wanted it cut, and he didn't, I would be telling her to back off. I don't care how he looks, I just want him to be happy with how he looks.

THERAPY FFS only a YANK would say that lol
02:35 PM on 03/21/2012
Maybe only a yank would say - but that is because they tend to speak thier minds. Many of us thought it but hesitated to say it. Unfortunately too many mothers now look on thier children as ornaments or accessories to their lives and not as responsibilities.

That little boy has such gorgeous hair! It almost seems a crime to cut it!

it's hair, it will grow back.
on the flip side, all those locks will go to provide wigs for those who have no hair due to cancer treatment, so it's all good.

he may of laughed about being called a girl but wait until he is older he could have supressed feelings surface. being called a girl. his hair is ridiculously long. girls have it tied up or kept tidy. he has to tie it up at school for saefty reasons. sikhs wear a covering over their hair when young and that is accepted as part of their religion. they don't cut hair.

agree if posted message re giving to childrens wigs who have cancer. he will feel that he has done good and also raised money. but his mother has a strange affection for long hair. did she hope he would become a girl ?

If Rean's parents are reading this I wonder if they would consider donating his hair to a charity that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair through illness...http://www.littleprincesses.org.uk/
My daughter has just had her hair cut short to help them.

Samson!! Mind those Delilahs.

I love his hair so much and I understand the mother's reluctance to have it cut however, the child's wishes must come first on this occasion because of the bullying. He does look like a girl and HE knows it! Perhaps he will grow it again when he is older. Beautiful hair all the same. I know if I had a boy I would have felt the same as the Mother but it would be wrong for the child!

One has to asl wha are these parents thining of. To satisfy her needs she put this boy through trauma. We all know how children can be and this boy must have gone through a little bit of hell.

I dont believe for one moment she would not have preferred girls.. no mother would put her child thru this kind or torment .obviously this hair is for her benefit not his .call herself a mother ?.god helps us all if she is the example for motherhood.... she needs lessons on how to bring up children properly for their benefits not hers.

how can you possibly say that his hair whilst i do belive needs a cut ther is no reason to assume its dirty or lice infested

I can possibly say it as the way the hair is all matted means it cannot be getting washed or brushed properly and is ripe for headlice being the boy is at school - I stand by my comment and shame on any 'mum' who thinks this standard of hair care is acceptable - especially when mixing with other children!

No, head lice actually like clean hair!

That is factually incorrect and a myth created to make kids not feel bad about having them!!
