Six fingers thought to belong to a female child aged between two-and-a-half and four have been discovered in a rubbish bin outside a Hawaiian housing complex.
The grisly discovery was made behind the Kukui Gardens Housing Complex in Liliha, last month.
Mother-of-five Gina Rose Vendegna found the fingers in a plastic bag while she searched for bottles and cans to recycle.
She told KHON-TV: "I knew for a fact those were fingers when I seen the fingernails. They were preserved in a Ziploc bag.
"I broke down thinking about the child."
Two complete fingers and four partial fingers made up the tragic find.
Police say there are no reports of missing children and hospital enquiries have not yielded any information.
Sgt Kim Buffett with Honolulu Crimestoppers told Fox News: "I have not seen anything in my 25 years... like this.
"We're really heavily relying on the public out there, because someone has to know something. It's not normal to find fingers in a dumpster."
