Falkland Islands: UK Attacks Argentina's 'Illegal' Threat To Oil Exploration

Falklands

Argentina has threatened to take legal action against British companies involved in oil development in the Falkland Islands - a move described by the Foreign Office as "wholly counter-productive".

The country's foreign minister Hector Timerman said there would be "administrative, civil and criminal" penalties against the companies involved.

He said "the resources of the South Atlantic are the property of all the Argentines", including any oil found off the shores of the islands they call the Malvinas.

A UK Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "These latest attempts to damage the economic livelihoods of the Falkland Islands people regrettably reflect a pattern of behaviour by the Argentine government.

"From harassing Falklands shipping to threatening the islanders' air links with Chile, Argentina's efforts to intimidate the Falklands are illegal, unbecoming and wholly counter-productive.

"We are studying Argentina's remarks carefully and will work closely with any company potentially affected to ensure that the practical implications for them are as few as possible."

Rockhopper Exploration, based in Salisbury, Wiltshire, is the only company so far to strike oil. It has been seeking a 2bn-dollar investor to fund crude production from last year's discovery. A spokesman for the company said it would not be commenting on the matter.

The Foreign Office spokeswoman added: "Hydrocarbon exploration in the Falklands is a legitimate commercial venture.

"The British government supports the right of the Falkland Islanders to develop their own natural resources for their own economic benefit. This right is an integral part of their right of self-determination.

"We remain clear that domestic Argentine legislation does not apply to the Falkland Islands or South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The Falkland Islands Government is, as always, entitled to develop both fisheries and hydrocarbons industries within its own waters, without interference from Argentina."

Easy, we just send a task force down with eh,eh er, em, um something that doesn't involve an aircraft carrier or nimrods or sea harriers or basically anything that won it for us the last time.

Maybe the torys will commandeer the small boats in windermere to attack the argies.

Sell the oil exploration rights to America (that’s North America) to any US citizens reading this there is a south but not as in Texas. This south starts below there and runs all the way to the cold waters of Antarctica, any way if the Americans start the exploration Argentina can argue with them. We know how the Americans love oil so they will send in the drones; suddenly Argentinian politicians will lose interest.

Well that should help to push fuel prices up by suppliers. Slightest hint of unrest in oil producing countries and UP GOES THE COST OF FUEL.

What a bunch of clowns are Government are. We give millions in aid to Argentina even during this dispute. It would be better spent on two new Aircraft Carriers built here in Britain.

The Falklands are a country in their own rightm desendants of British people. They are too cold for ordinary Argentinians.

We don't actually need an aircraft carrier. Stanley has an airport and we can fly from the Azores.

There is a military airport at Mount Pleasant which has been used since the 1983 conflict for troop and civilian transport. It is something like 40 miles from Stanley and can handle large passenger aircraft. I have been there several times.

. I believe that Mr. Cameron has had emergency talks with the admiralty about our response should Argentina send troops to the Falklands. The outcome of those talks being HMS Victory and HMS Belfast are even now being readied for sea and the trip south. It seems it will take a little longer for HMS Sirius to join them but that is also on the cards.
10:37 PM on 03/16/2012
Would Mr Cameron please refrain from sending in the Royal Navy until I've at least finished a couple of card-board cut-out models of HMS Rodney and HMS Hood to send down.

We could indilge in some sabre rattling of our own... but we don't have any sabres any more :(

Argentina looking for a bloody nose again, their armed forces are being watched as we speak, so any move in the direction towards the Falklands would almost be repulsed immediately, and this is why they are trying legal tactics, smells of the pen being mightier than the sword i think, it also probably has something to do with Argentina's economic woe's and their politicians poor ratings with their own people and the perceived weakness of our armed forces, which true we do not have any aircraft carriers but we do still have some sub's which could cause some considerable damage.

"the resources of the South Atlantic are the property of all the Argentines",

Isn't there a three mile limit in the area?

Think you will find that the Falklands are abit more than 3 miles from the Argies!
06:42 PM on 03/16/2012
Try reading my comment again & think again, Argentina are saying the south Atlantic which means from South America to Africa to Antarctica are Argentinian. What has happened to 3 mile limites &International waters?

rba2753199, I think you will find that the Falkland islands have never been part of Argentina.
British and Dutch and maybe French have inhabited it but Argentinians have not.
The only reason the Argentinians are interested in it again is because oil has been discvovered. If the British want to extract that oil then they are going to need the help of a larger land base which of course is Argentina.
Why don't we pay Argentina to help us to extract the oil and give them money for their assistance?
Argentina don't really want governance over a lot of 'Bennys' anyway (our troops' nickname for the Falkland Islanders during the last conflict).
08:49 AM on 03/17/2012
If you read my comment correctly you'd realise thats my point.Argentina seems to be saying ALL the South Atlantic is theirs from Sth America to Africa to the Antarctic
09:35 AM on 03/17/2012
'why dont we pay argentina' all the millions they've had in aid from us and still are, why should we. We should STOP giving them money

When will they claim the Isles of Wight and Man as theirs ,to add to their 5th.class wine & inedible corned beef?
05:21 PM on 03/16/2012
Don't forget that the Argentinian are bought up on this myth that they own the Falklands (so called Malvinas to them) and its tottally inbred and any Agentinian politician who wants to appeal to the masses will always quote that as fact to the Agentinian people, anything else would be deemed politically weak. But does it not strike you how the Argy Politicians ratchet up the claim when their own poll situation is becoming stagnent and they start loosing voters. The only thing we have to watch is that the Milatary may take over again because the normal (if you call them normal) politicians are all mouth and no action and that does not appeal to the Argy public.

Where as the Argy Army cannot follow through.

STILL don't like corned beef!

Correct Mike War.
Sabre rattling wins votes, Thatcher done this here
many years ago, do not forget this.
Thatcher sent the wrong message to Argentina,
They thought they were on to a winner, thus invaded
the Falklands.
I am old enough to remember this do not be conned again.

So it is Falklander's oil then, not Argentinian just because they say so? No surprise there. When will they accept the Falklands "belong" to whomever the islanders choose not because another country has started posturing recently?

Icdmartin, the islanders are staunchly British, they want no part in Argentina.
12:53 PM on 03/17/2012
I know. I thought it would be obvious that I was emphasising it is their choice whose flag they come under. Why would you need to state the obvious?
