Gunman Reported On Campus At Rochester Institute Of Technology In New York

University Campus Lockdown Lifted After 'Gunman' Turns Out To Be A Man With An Umbrella

Students at New York’s Rochester Institute of Technology were this morning told to stay indoors after reports of a gunman on campus.

Thankfully, warnings to take cover turned out to be needless after Monroe County Sheriff's deputies revealed the reported rifle was actually an umbrella.

A message posted on the university’s website read: RIT Alert: Shelter in place and stay indoors. Person with rifle spotted outside Kate Gleason residence hall.

An earlier post had stated: Shelter in place. Person allegedly with rifle spotted outside Kate Gleason residence hall. People in the area of the residence halls are advised to stay inside, lock or barricade doors until further notice. Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies are on scene.

Panic on Twitter quickly turned to giggles after the 'rifle' was revealed to be a harmless brolly.
