Man Dies In Cliff Fall In Whitby, North Yorkshire

A man has died after falling down a cliff, police said on Friday night.

The man's body was discovered at the foot of Saltwick Nab, in Whitby, North Yorkshire, this afternoon.

He had severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, North Yorkshire Police said.

A lifeboat and Sea King helicopter were scrambled to the scene, police said.

A spokesman said the man's body was lifted to the top of the cliff before being taken to hospital by ambulance.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Officers are trying to contact the man's next of kin, who are thought to live outside the North Yorkshire area.

This man was the sweetest funniest kindest man you could ever meet. He was a amazing friend to me and all that knew him. And for the sick sad people who think this is funny you really need to take a good hard look at yourself, Before you judge other people. Rest in peace you will always hold a special place in my heart xx

This man was a true gent and a very loved member of our community, those who have bad mouthed him need to pay a little more respect as he was a son/brother and great friend and it is a great tragedy. God bless you my friend and sleep tight xx

Dear Readers,

People who have made sympathetic comments on this web site is welcomed and appreciated by the family and friends. I am a friend of the young man who fell and have known him very well for many years so is upsetting to me just to do this posting. I think the family would like to thank the services and those who called them, this could not have been at all easy and distressing for some. There is little that can be said until formal proceedings have been concluded and future comments should be made by the family if they so wish. I think everyone knows what I am trying to say here.

There is probably on one of two likely explanations, either he fell or he jumped, if he fell that is extremely unfortunate, if he jumped that is extremely selfish.

How do you know that if he jumped it was a selfish act? My father died in pretty much identical circumstances and he had dementia, not so bad that he didn't know where he was or what he was doing but you don't know what happened, just as we will never know what happened to my dad. He took his daily walk just as he had done for years and was found dead at the bottom of a 40 foot cliff. He had to have climbed a 3 foot wall to get to the cliff edge so we will never know how or why. The coroner recorded an open verdict.

It is so easy to happen expecially when your attention is diverted by some thing Its just a tragic accident but we must all think of his family and how heart broken they must be my heart goes out to them at this hard time.

Why do people go so near the edge of a cliff, it can crumble at any time, I know the ones at Seaford Head have a notice now DO NOT GO NEAR THE EDGE and people don't because there had been a couple of accidents where people have fallen off. Saying that my condolences to the family of this man, and may he Rest in Peace now.
