A shopper had his toe ripped off by an escalator after trapping his foot in the moving metal stairs.

The unnamed man was said to be "screaming in agony" after the accident, which happened at the West End Arcade in Nottingham.

Other shoppers tried to drag the 24-year-old man, who was bleeding profusely, out from the escalator, reports the BBC.

Shops close by were called upon for ice, so that the toe could be preserved, before the man was freed by paramedics. The man was awake the whole time during the incident.

Ambulance men described the victim as "tough" given the severity of his injuries.

Shop worker David Rose, 57, who was working close by, told The Nottingham Post:

"They took the escalator top off before they took him away, which I'm guessing was to see if they could find the toe."

The man is now being treated at Nottingham Queen's Medical Centre. The escalator has been closed down, and an investigation has been launched into the incident.

I got my skirt caught in a downwards escalator at Meadowhall, I was absolutely terrified as it was pulling me backwards. It happened so quickly and no one realised straight away. I had just left the cinema there and had popcorn in one hand and a drink in the other - so didn't even have a hand free to save myself. I think I went into shock afterwards and was helped into a hospitality room where someone got a manager. Very apologetic at the time, but my skirt was ruined and they would investigate etc etc!! The next morning it was a different story and they didn't seem to care!! Reckoned they had had it checked out and it was fine! Ruined my weekend!!! Ended up going home early - and Meadowhall didn't give a monkeys!!!!

You should have reported the incident to the local health and safety executive and contacted a solicitor.

I think I would scream too if my big toe got caught in the escalator. Poor man - wonder if he was wearing shoes or sandles. I always jump the last part as I am always a big apprehensive about being sucked under. Hope they managed to sew his toe back on and he recovers OK in hospital.

I am totally phobic about escalators. When I was a child I was in one of the big department stores in Liverpool and a man tried to go up an escalator that was going down, he fell and split his head open, there was blood everywhere. My mother shooed me on so I couldn't see but I know for sure now that nobody with his brains spilling out would have survived that.
My husband despairs of me when we travel and I refuse to go down an escalator, I don't mind going up so much but I always see that man lying at the bottom with his brains spilling out.

You are the same as me, I would rather go up the escalator but walk down the stairs or even get a lift. If the lift is small though I can't stand that either. I saw a similar accident with someone trying to walk up the going down escalator and they fell also but someone at the bottom saw it and pressed the button that turned the escalator off, which was lucky because there could have been a serious accident there. Frightening really.

My mother used to tell me when I was a kid to stay away from the edges of the escalators of I'd get 'sucked under'!
Definately made me scared of them when I was a kid.
Remember the wooden ones in tube stations!!!

Yes, gimmietbaby, remember the fire at Kings Cross station. All the rubbish people dropped collected underneath it and caught fire.

I do remember. Incredible fire hazzard. People walking up and down it all day dropping cigarettes and as you say litter!
Unbelieveable tragedy. How things have changed in a few short years.

I once worked on a ship where the captain had no big toes and in port visitors used to ask if the captain has been on the bottle as he had no balance and used to sway a lot and that was when the ship was tied up alongside on the jetty. Luckily he had a good scense of humour as when christmas came around and the ships officers exchanged gifts he unwrapped his to find that they had bought him a pair of flip flops.

I wonder was this man texting or paying too much attention to his mobile or tablet or saw a beautiful woman and he lusted after her and forgot he was on an escalator?
