Fuel prices are hitting drivers hard

Recent rises in petrol prices at the pumps will wipe out any savings drivers could have expected from warmer-weather motoring, the AA claims.

Already at record levels, fuel prices have risen further in recent days, with petrol now at an average of 138.50p a litre and diesel at 145.45p, the AA reported.

Warmer weather and more daylight reduce a car engine's winter workload and improve fuel efficiency by at least two miles per gallon (2mpg).

For a petrol car with an average fuel consumption of 31mpg, or 6.8 miles per litre, a 2mpg improvement adds 24 miles to the range of a 55-litre (12-gallon) fuel tank - equivalent to a saving of 3.5 litres, £4.85 a tank, or 8.8p a litre.

The AA said the 6.25p-a-litre increase in the price of petrol since the start of the year had slashed much of the "summer" saving and the Treasury's 3.624p-a-litre fuel duty increase with VAT, planned for 1 August, would "finish the job".

Recent rises have, in the past month, added £1.75 to the cost of refuelling a typical petrol tank and added £2.12 for an 80-litre commercial van diesel tank.

Since the start of the year, £13.27 has been added to the monthly fuel costs of a family with two petrol cars,

Compared to a year ago, an extra £5.78 million a day is being spent on fuel, while compared to March 2010, an extra £23.21m a day is being forked out for petrol and diesel.

Regionally, Yorkshire and Humberside has the cheapest petrol, at 137.9p a litre. Northern Ireland remains the most expensive at 139.2p.

The dearest diesel, at 145.9p a litre, is in Wales and Northern Ireland. Yorkshire and Humberside is the cheapest for diesel at 144.7p a litre and is the only region offering a price below 145p.

The AA said the "£7 gallon" had at last arrived at a main fuel station, with an M4 service station charging 153.9p a litre for diesel this week.

AA president Edmund King said: "Tax on fuel is not equitable and hits people harder because of where they live and how mobile they need to be.

"Yes, rich car owners with bigger-engined vehicles pay more for their indulgence because of higher vehicle excise duty and fuel consumption, but poorer drivers suffer disproportionately."

He went on: "Those who live in rural areas, those that have had to move further away to find affordable housing or those whose family budget is on a knife-edge because of daily travel costs to nursery school, childminders and work face a greater and unfair burden.

"Rather than pushing ahead with the fuel duty increase, the Treasury would do better to freeze fuel duty and work on a fuel price stabiliser that is relevant to current record prices.

"If not, the Government will see not only more people claiming benefits as rising travel costs discourage work but get less tax as motoring-dependent businesses go bust and lay off workers."

Campaign group FairFuelUK has launched a last-ditch attempt to pressure the Government to scrap fuel tax increases expected to be confirmed in next week's Budget.

FairFuelUK supporters across the UK are being asked to contact their MPs by email to put pressure on the Treasury for a cut in fuel duty and not just another freeze.

Part 2
Look who is head of shell, peter voser over 10.1 million he got, and to beat it all out, the (slabberhead) not the word I want to use believe me, is getting free fuel WTF are we the public, the majority going to start our RBP? Its time people like voser was brought down a step of two, it’s us the public that lets the likes of him and the banks walk away with millions each year. So if these morons weren’t getting the income from us the public then there would be less money for these (*&^% to get.

NO THE ABOVE PARAGRAPH IN BRACKETS IS A WASTE OF TIME, STOP BUYING FUEL NO MORE CRAWLING TO GOVERNMENT’S. WE THE PEOPLE CAN BRING THE GOVERNMENTS TO THEIR KNEES, IT WAS DONE ELSEWHERE, IT CAN BE DONE HERE. MY GOD WERE THE MAJORITY WE LET A VERY SMALL HANDFUL OF PEOPLE RULE OUR LIVES, WE JUMP THROUGH HOOPS FOR THEM, LET US TAKE A LEAD, N O W.

Sorry I had to put this in 3 parts because the points I want to get across I cannot do it in less words. Probable there are people who can but not me. The huffers are like government’s they don’t allow free speech they only allow a few words, they want us to crawl and jump through hoops as well.
Part 1

IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO IS WILLING TO START A FUEL WAR???
START ON HERE I WOULD START A REFFERENDOM/BOYCOTT/PROTEST = (RBP) WHATEVER IT TAKES, BUT I DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHERE TO START. SURLY SOMEONE OUT THERE CAN ARRANAGE SOMETHING.
I have been calling for years to boycott governments, oil producers/suppliers, oil companies, people like shell, BP, Texaco who ever. If we do the job right, and do it now, then the very Arabs will be shaking in their boots, if EVERYONE STOPPED BUYING OIL OF ANY KIND FOR A WEEK TO START WITH, THEN WE WILL LOOK AT LONGER SPELLS.

As we pay at least 84p per litre in tax, if you took that off, we would be paying about £2.75p per gallon, now how would that help the economy, you would get the cost back in people having money to spend elsewhere, transportation could come down, not only for the car owner, but for buisness too, so instead of paying huge amounts for fuel, they could run more lorries, and maybe employ more people, so those people would be paying tax, the list could go on forever, but instead the goverment keeps putting the price up, and then spends the duty on themselves, wars, EU, and foreign aid, dont you just living here in England !!!!!!!!!!!
03:43 PM on 03/16/2012
The govermment take billions from motorist on road tax and look at the state of our roads. They also make billions in fuel also due to high tax and still they want more. Sorry but this is a very very rich country regardless what the government say about the deficit it still has a heck of money stashed . This is just pure greed and just adds to higher inflation for everybody regardless if you own a car.

We can't have a price drop in fuel because the government can't afford it but bless them, they are proposing a 10p drop in tax for the high earners. We can all see where these thieving bas**rd MPs loyalties lie.

The massive revenue earned from the motorists, many of whom have no choice but pay, might be a pallatable if it was spent for the welfare of the motorist. Alas no, it is plugging the holes in the governments' wasteful projects such as bank bail outs and tax handouts. In the rural areas, a car is a necessity. E.g. In a well served area, the buses do not start until 7 and most commuters need to take their trains before that time. Even if you work locally, very rarely are the buses frequent or start in time.

Government makes too much money from the excuse of rising petrol prices. We should all be aware that despite the claims there is absolutely no reason for prices to be rising yet again, it is profiteering upon your suffering since all other prices are effected by fuel rises. No one who can doing anything will, nor do they care.

Be aware as fuel prices have risen, number plate theft as become more common, they put on your stolen plates fill up and drive off. Cameras at the filling station record your number and then comes a knock at your front door
On finding your number plates gone inform the police immediately, you will need the crime number if any drive offs or motoring offences come your way

The point....is this, petrol prices are never going to go down. Governments are never going to cut duty. Road tax is always going to go up, insurance is always going to go up, garage prices including MOT are always going to go up. There is no point in moaning about successive governments lack of investment in alternative power, the greed of the oil industry and it's investors, the price fixing by OPEC, this is just the way it is. All you need to remember is.....when you are priced off the road, the rich won't be. Anyone for tennis!!!!

Well nsk we can do something about it now. S T O P buying fuel don't let a very small handful of people (the government) rule our lives any more. These are the minority of people who make us jump through hoops, we don't have the nails to scratch ourselves with, still the money ridden government keep putting up prices of everything, and we let them, and they do it through the 9876543 tax. Its tax for every single thing you buy should it be a bar of chocolate, the government get money through tax/vat. They are cutting wages, work, benefits, and as our money/income is growing smaller, the government’s money/income is getting larger. The government don’t, now D O N T allow us to get our heads above water, they expect us the majority to keep paying extra money, as they keep rising the price especially fuel through vat/tax, while we the majority are getting less money and the 9876543 expect us to afford the rises.
So nsk we the very large majority can do something now, check my other comment, providing the huffers let's it stay on here... SOMEONE PLEASE START A PROTEST/BOYCOTT/REFFERENDOM, N O W.
