Rufus Wainwright slams Gaga

Rufus Wainwright has taken aim at Lady Gaga, branding her "disingenuous" and insisting the Poker Face hitmaker has "not one good song" in her back catalogue.

The eccentric singer has sold more than 23 million albums worldwide and has a devoted gay and straight following because of her anthems - but openly gay Wainwright is not a fan.

He tells Music Week magazine: "I totally admire her tenacity, her ambition and her strength of vision. There's just not one good song there.

"People, especially gay men, are falling so hard for it.

"Certain things that she says: 'Look at me. I was like you one day and now I'm this - and you can do it too.' I find it a bit disingenuous.

"We are in this somewhat sinister period and artists have got to kind of toughen up and be real. It's about conveying what's inside us, as opposed to the return of the cone breasts. I find it predictable and boring."

He's entitled to his opinion like anybody else. Don't have to defend Rufus or Lady Gaga. She is a thousand times bigger star than he will ever be. He is more a cabaret performer; she sells out arenas. They aren't in the same league at all.

He's got his following and she's got hers. Lady Gaga is more commercial than Rufus. It's all OK. Personally, I prefer Lady Gaga's music to his, but that's just my personal taste.

I really don't understand why anyone is jumping on RW for giving his honest opinion. He doesn't think she's talented, but he doesn't bash her or use harsh language. He was asked and told the truth.

And for the people that are trying to defend Gaga by citing the number of Grammy's she's won or records she's sold...that's not the point. Some people like her, some (like RW) think she tries too hard and produces standard pop-lite music but with weirder costumes. If you like her, continue to buy her music, but it's silly to bash RW for politly giving his honest opinion.

Why does RW need to go after Lady Gaga? I don't understand why he needs to be derogatory. If you don't like her then don't listen. Many people like her and if you don't then keep it to yourself.

He really wasn't that derogatory; he was just giving his honest opinion. He said that he admired her for what she's done but doesn't credit her as a talented muscian or as being especially creative and original. I kind of agree with him.

But it's not like he's bashing her or telling people to stop listening to her. Dude just doesn't like her songs.

I am afraid, Rufus is right . At first ,I paid little attention to Lady Gaga's life and music. From the unavoidable press exposure of her style, I viewed her as another young, ambitious, talented woman , one of my natural descendants ( for better or worse )with great management . More power to her was my first reaction. Perhaps she might be able to do some good with her name. However , After the unrespectul response received for adressing her with the plagiarism of my vision in "Lady Gaga's Boudoir"in Barney's window,it difficult to have the same view point. Knowing more now, than I wished to about the politics of the Pop Star ,I have to agree with the very talented Rufus Wainwright. info:wwwcolettetheartist.com

Havent heard anything by Rufus Wainwright, and this article might be written out of jelousy, but the truth is that Lady Gaga's music is awful. She is an amazing show though, but musically speaking...Horrid tunes one after the other. And honestly, you dont have to be a music critic to realise that.

youtube "Hallelujah." I'm not sure if his version is the original, but it's the best.

Just my opinion, but I'd place him fourth, behind John Cale (#1), Jeff Buckley (#2) and the composer Leonard Cohen (#3).

Rufus who? If not for his famous family name, he wouldn't sell a record. Gaga made it ON HER OWN,

For those who say she has no talent;

Rufus, I used to like you. Jealousy is so unattractive. And stop copying Liza Minnelli. That drag show routine is so disengenuous

I'm surprised RW doesn't realize that Gaga's musical talent is far below secondary in importance to Gaga--the Unit, the commodity. For better or for worse, Gaga will be remembered, and Rufus...not so much.

Rufus you should get her to sing one of your songs anyway people listening to music get their own interpretations not listening to critics.
09:21 PM on 03/19/2012
I agree with Rufus, she is sort of a female Liberace/Elton John without the song writing of Bernie Taupin. She is a bit sexier.

Rufus, a lot of people in the music industry disagree with you. Lady Gaga has won 5 Grammy awards, including best pop vocal album and best dance recording. Her music may not be your cup of tea, but there are millions who have bought her music and enjoy it.
