UK Troops In Afghanistan Launch 'Major Offensive' Against Taliban

Afghanistan Uk Offensive

A major offensive on Taliban strongholds has been launched by Afghan security forces, supported by British troops.

Among those overseeing the Afghan-led operation launched on Friday in the area surrounding Helmand's second city of Gereshk were members of 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.

The regiment lost five soldiers in a blast which killed six while they were travelling in an armoured vehicle about 20 miles away two weeks ago.

The operation - dubbed Now Roz, meaning New Day in Dari - aims to rid the Taliban from an area which is traditionally regarded as a stronghold for the insurgency.

Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) moved into the area on Friday while coalition troops set up observational posts on high ground over the Yakchal valley.

Over the weekend Afghan troops have moved from compound to compound, meeting little resistance as insurgents attempted to flee.

They uncovered a number of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) as compounds were searched.

Second Lieutenant Chris Trezise, from Maidstone, Kent, of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment, was among British troops overseeing the operation.

He said the drive was the result of preparatory work to "empower" Afghan forces and "give them the tools to do it for themselves".

Speaking on Saturday, he added: "The objective is to carry out an ANSF clearance operation, with the Afghan National Army clearing north to south and the Afghan National Civil Order Police preventing insurgents fleeing southwards.

"The clearance is going well although it is not yet complete.

"Troops on the ground did not meet much small arms fire but the ANA have found a number of IEDs and suicide vests.

"The Afghan forces are doing very well, we've given them their tasks and they have gone about them very professionally."

The operation comes as coalition troops prepare to withdraw in 2014 and after Afghan president Hamed Khazi called for them to move back to main bases by 2013.

British troops are increasingly moving into mentoring roles, ensuring the Afghan forces are ready to take charge of security.

It is hoped that local security forces will be able to take control of the Gereshk district by the end of this year and this weekend's operation is seen as a vital part of the bid to make the area safe.

A number of suspected insurgents who attempted to flee Yakchal to the south were captured by the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP) late on Saturday.

They were held for processing by British troops and will be detained by Afghan authorities to await trial.

Officers from ANCOP, approached by locals alarmed by the heavy military presence and the sound of several blasts, offered reassurances and explained the purpose of the mission.

I wonder how many women and children will be murdered this week.
12:08 PM on 03/19/2012
Quite a few, Official figures for Afganistan & Iraq are well over 100,000 but this is something that is never published in our media. They like to keep us in the dark anout things like that!!! Thats how propaganda works..
02:50 PM on 03/19/2012
Where, in Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, the Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria etc etc the list goes on but you will find the average British Soldier does not do ay "murdering" in Afghanistan, or have you been to Afghanistan to count?
03:45 PM on 03/19/2012
sorry I forgot that when our troops kill people these days we call it 'collateral damage'

Whatever helps them sleep soundly at night.
As for the official figures of how many civilians have died by the hands of our armed forces in just Iraq and Afghanistan you can google them. They are not hidden and the figure is massive.

Very nice, I hope the "mission" will be as offensive as possible to achieve the desired results. It would just be even nicer if there was a clear notion of exactly what that mission is.

The Taliban will be there after England and the US forces are gone. it is a pointless exercise that only creates ill.

The leadership in the USA and in England are proving themselves incapable of thought.

As for the Taliban we have played into their hands with a long occupation and no clear aims. The entire regional area is worse than it was. Bush and Blair? Osama bin Laden? An awful lot of hysteria over something that was settled 10 years ago. What is military victory anymore?

It is a not so brave new world and the USA and England had better start thinking about how to live in it.

if you read history you will find alexandra the great failed, so how long will this war continue ???

There are three things that appear common in third world, backward countries. 1. Do not educate the masses. 2. Brainwash the populace with religion. 3.Treat women as second class citizens. As soon as we pull out of Afghanistan it will revert to type, and all of our brave, lost soldiers will count for nothing. In Afghanistan history constantly repeats itself.

The only reason the "Taliban" exist in Afganistan is because it is occupied by our troops..
09:53 PM on 03/18/2012
Don't think so. The Taliban were there long before our troops.
11:40 AM on 03/19/2012
Is that why only 3 troops were killed in the first 3 years of occupation!!! Then year 4 the death toll shot up to almost 200??? Come on!!!! The Taliban is more a porduct of our media and Western agression!!! Our occupation of Afganistan and media coverage of the Taliban has worked as a recruitment drive for these terrorists!!
11:52 AM on 03/19/2012
Is that why we only lost 3 troops in the first year of occupation?? Then year 4 the figures shot upto almost 200!! This war has been baised on lies from the start. Our illegal occupation of Afganistan along with the media coverage of the Taliban has only acted as a recruitment drive for extremists!!

The war we should have fought was against Pakistan. Much of what happens in Afghanistan is funded and supported by Pakistan. The Taliban hide in Pakistan when things get too hot and have a steady supply of uneducated cannon fodder ready to join their ranks, including British born Pakistanis that go there for their "religious" training on how to make IEDs. Many of the roadside bombs in Afghanistan are triggered by British PAYG mobiles.
The troops in Afghanistan should come home, the biggest group that threatens us is already here.

well they did have bin liner in their midst, god knows how long for

that is enough to condemn them for life

and never get another bit of aid from the west

damn things would stab their mothers in the back for a quick buck

It seems we also have a steady supply of uneducated cannon fodder ready to join our armed forces ranks.

Ah another comment using the "cannon fodder" comment. How out of date, unknowledgable and unaware are you about the modern British Army. There is certainly no cannon fodder fellah, every soldier is highly trained, mutli tasked and absolutly coursed up on things you can only watch on your X Box. Even a modern Infantry soldier has more courses and training under his belt than 95% of civvies (and in that i include the fire service and Police force) and i wont even mention the high tech trades including aircraft avionics, optics, jet turbine repairs, aircrew, pilots, vehicle repair guys, combat engineers, signallers, artillery forward
observers etc etc...I can only presume as opposed to being a starbucks coffee frother or a Tesco till tapper you are a rocket scientisit. How unaware are you of the subject you are commenting on, certainly makes us lot laugh.

This was never marketed as the War On The Taliban. This was sold, fallaciously, as the War on Al Qaeda. Now they seem to be suddenly absent. ‘Our’ enemy has morphed into the Taliban, in the way Bin Laden morphed into Saddam, who then morphed into Ahmadinejad. ‘ Our’ enemies seem to have multiple personality disorder. They can’t work out who they are.
06:08 PM on 03/18/2012
The troops were not forced to go into the armed forces they went on there own free will .They all know of the consequences of war entails .

How you ever asked yourself why recruitment is always targeted in areas of high unemployment and social deprivation? Recruits are offered the chance to learn a trade that they can use later after their time is served. In the current climate, when who ever signs up, knows they must survive Afghanistan, I take my hat off to the men and women who choose to serve their country instead of join their peers on the dole.
It must be great not to have to make such tough choices and be able to look down on them and the rest of us little people. I'm guessing you work in banking.

One wonders if any of the offspring of our politicians have been deployed to the front line as cannon fodder.
At leaast some of our Royals have the courage to go and fight for their country.

Well said it seems duty is a dirty word to many I was soldier did my best so did most of the rest but now we are expected to apologize well hell no sure we made mistakes and crap happens but we at least tried not sitting safe at home in critical mode and commenting on things those that have not served can never understand we fought not for some great ideal we did it because we had no choice and for our mates we never expected praise and we did not get it But do we deserve to be vilified for doing our duty as we saw it ? have you asked any sqaddies if they want to be in Afghan, lots will say yes, how do I know, because I served. We try not to think about death only the team and training and what we stand for.

NATO is going to leave, sometime, and when they do it will be a messy withdrawal. The sooner it happens the better and the fewer of our troops will be mutilated or killed. Whatever the purpose of our presence there, and even that is not clear, we shall have achieved little of lasting worth.
