Scientists Discover 'Gluttony Gene' That Fails To Signal When You're Full

Gluttony Gene

Scientists have discovered a "gluttony gene" that may be responsible for obesity cases caused by compulsive non-stop eating.

In laboratory tests on mice, researchers discovered the Bdnf gene mutation failed to transmit the message to the brain that signals when the body is full.

The researchers hope the findings, published online in the journal Nature Medicine, could help with the treatment of obesity.

"This discovery may open up novel strategies to help the brain control body weight," said lead researcher Dr Baoki Xu, from Georgetown University Medical Centre in the US, as cited by the Press Association.

Two key hormones, leptin and insulin, release chemical signals that activate neurons in the hypothalamus region of the brain to signal when the body is satiated.

In the mice that had a mutation of the Bdnf gene, the neurons were not activated and therefore their food cravings continued. As a result, the mice ate twice as much as those without the mutation.

"If there is a problem with the Bdnf gene, neurons can't talk to each other and the leptin and insulin signals are ineffective, and appetite is not modified," said Dr Xu.

"Short" versions of the Bdnf gene block the leptin and insulin signals and prevent the "stop eating" message passing through the brain to the correct appetite-suppressing locations, say the scientists.

Previous studies have shown that mice without a 'long' version of this gene also suffered from memory impairment.

A link has also been previously identified between Bdnf mutations and obesity in humans.

Dr Xu said the next step was to look into the development of drugs that stimulate Bdnf activity in the brain.

"We have opened the door to both new avenues in basic research and clinical therapies, which is very exciting," he added.

Prof Sadaf Farooqi, who studies the relationship between genes and obesity at the University of Cambridge, told the BBC: "Genes have a surprisingly large role, it's often underestimated. Between 40 and 70% of the difference in weight between two individuals is due to genetics."

However, she added that the gene mutation is "very rare" in humans.

  • How To Beat Your Inner Glutton

Doreen Virtue, author of Constant Craving offers her advice on how to resist your salt, sugar and fat cravings and stay on the right track with your diet.

  • Stave Off Chocolate Pangs With...

"Ginger ale and soy milk are high in tyramine, which can help relieve chocolate cravings. Pekoe tea is high in chocolate's other stimulating ingredient. theobromine."

  • Eat A Satifying Sugar-Alternative

"One reason we shun fruit during our sweet cravings is that fruit seems like a deprivation alternative. We've got to dress fruit up! Put a little flavoured, fat-free yoghurt on top. Puree the fruit with an ice cube and some ginger ale. Microwave sliced apple for two minutes at high temperature with a little bit of cinnamon and you've got a quick, low calorie apple-pie type treat."

  • Understand The Reasons Behind Your Cravings

"If, after analysing your cravings, you discover any anger, frustration or stress, ask yourself how you might take even one step toward alleviating the source of these emotions. Is there someone you can talk to, or some changes that you can make in your life? If you reduce the source of your uncomfortable emotions, you won't need to crave sweet things anymore."

  • Beware Of 'All Or Nothing' Thinking

If we tell our bodies that this chocolate bar or hamburger will be our last treat ever, we're more likely to binge. "It's like we're seeing a beloved person for the last time, so of course we want to spend as much time as possible with that object of affection." The key is eat all treats in moderation and if the craving get too much, seek healthier alternatives.

  • Fight Off Salty Cravings

"Crunch on crisp vegetables dipped in low calorie, fat-free salad dressing. Instead of potato chips and french fries, go for carrot and celery sticks. Broccoli and cauliflower florets are also tasty replacements. They may not seem as appealing as the fatty versions, but the crunch and flavour will soothe your craving."

  • Treat Yourself With Non-Food Rewards

"Sweet treats usually equal reward. We all need pats on the back and kudos for hard work. But instead of stopping at the cookie shop or take-out, why not treat yourself to a new book, item of clothing or shoes? This will feel just as satisfying and is much healthier than a fat-laden treat."

Hey, I coulda told you where to find the gluttony gene......... congress and wall street for a start.

Some commenters are apparently under the delusion that fat people don't know they're fat, and that others find it unacceptable. Trust me. They know. And if you feel the need to point it out, you're pretty worthless as a person.

My partner of 26 years is built like a garden rake and has the gluttony gene I am sure. He NEVER stops eating but is less than 9 stone fully clothed and soaking wet! Fat people are certainly not the only gluttons - most thin people I have met can gorge themselves silly and stay thin. That's where the research SHOULD be.

scientists don't seem to have considered the historical socio-economic dietary factors that may have shaped the gene as a regulator.
Given most of our history - food and meat particularly were limited for the majority of western populations excepting elites.
Therefore, bolting food because of never being sure where next meal was coming from, would be natural and similar to the same behaviour in mammals where food suply was scarce.
Several continuous centuries would have therefore maintained this gene or modified its effect so as to be able to access random opportunity event in a normal condition of meagre food and mainly vegatable food intake for most social classes -made further acute by urbanisation and move of people from agricultural employment and sustinance from early 1800's, and therefore 99% of people.
socio-economic and seasonal local dietary circumstances would condition the body and over time must modify gene behavioural dietary regulation.
That obesity prevalance today could be directly correlated to the most economically disadvantaged within national societies.
This continuing link must surely be seen as an inhibiting and contributing indirect factor on human behaviour and genetic inheritance generationally by consequence.
Therefore, this surely needs to be factored into any empirical scientific study.

Sounds very complicated but I bet there is much truth here. I believe the same or similar factors are present in other other genes in large samples in a wide variety of people.

I agree with some of what you said, but I also think that the eating habits and environment of our ancient ancestors also play a role. People whose ancestors came from cold climes tend to be heavier as this was necessary for survival in cold climes. These people ate a lot of fatty meat in order to build up fat reserves to get them through the winter. Whereas peoples from more temperate climes ate a lot of vegetable matter. I think we retain these traits, stored away in our genes.

I love these comments. This is evidence that there is an actual, physiological factor that can contribute to the tendency to overeat... and everyone's determined to pretend it's not real. There's another gene that - when faulty - prevents people from eliminating heavy metals, causing physical changes in the brain that lead the sufferer to crave starches, fats and sugars even more than we're all programmed to do anyway. Up to 35% of people may have a faulty copy of this gene... but I guess that's not real, either?

No one's trying to say that if you have this gene or that gene you WILL be fat and no one's allowed to criticise you for it; they're just highlighting contributing factors in an attempt to find ways to help (and it's more than possible that in an environment in which crap food is NOT readily and constantly available a gene like this may have been neutral or even beneficial, meaning it could become prevalent very easily). Yes, there are myriad other reasons that people get fat and in many cases it IS simple laziness and lack of discipline. But you don't get to tell geneticists that their findings are wrong for no better reason than that you prefer to cling to your belief that fat people are just weak - you'd need a better reason than that if you WERE a geneticist yourself, and if you're not you just make yourself look ridiculous.

No one's pretending it's not real. It's just highly suspicious that most other countries don't have obesity problems the way we do. Saying "people are fat because of their genes therefore it's not their fault" when most of the other developed countries in the world don't have a 30% obesity rate is ridiculous.

For some reason this has only just come up now, after your second comment. I don't think it warrants any reply beyond what I already said: "No one's trying to say that if you have this gene or that gene you WILL be fat and no one's allowed to criticise you for it; they're just highlighting contributing factors in an attempt to find ways to help..."

Additionally, you're either a liar, or you can't read. They state VERY clearly that the mutation causing the condition is "VERY RARE IN HUMANS." Therefore it is quite obvious that up to 35% of people do not have this, as that would not make it VERY RARE.

It's unfortunate that you've chosen to tell me *I* can't read on the basis that you've incorrectly read the bit where I said "...there's ANOTHER gene that - when faulty...".

"Additionally" to what, by the way?

Here, if you're interested, is more information on the gene polymorphism I was talking about. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTHFR. It's not believed to cause weight gain in all cases or necessarily even many cases (and weight gain is a trivial problem compared to some of the other problems it's linked to) - I simply used it as an example of another genetic link to obesity, a known physical fact that people ignore because they prefer to think they already know why people are fat.

Scientists discover that if you eat a lot you get fat ......... brilliant , how did they come up with that ?

just find the gene's for the other 6 deadly sins now and we can all be perfect !

I'd like to know what effect our highly refined and over-processed diet of the last 50 years, adopted from the USA, has had on so many people's inability to stop guzzling. My guess is that most if not all of the ready prepared and takeaway stuff that is the core of overweight people's diets not only does not satisfy appetite, but also has the quality of stimulating appetite, even when the consumer could not possibly be hungry in any reasonable sense of the word. Lots of people out there have no idea how to cook a healthy satisfying meal from basic ingredients and they are generally the ones with weight problems.
22:06 on 19/03/2012
So this is scientific proof fat people are just greedy? Its not like you have to keep eating when you're not full to the point of being unable to stand, its still easy to manage portions however much you think they don't fill you up. Foods like chocolate and crisps won't satiate hunger anyway.
07:18 on 20/03/2012
it's not simply not feeling full, it's eating a meal and feeling hungrier than when you started. i know from experience.
21:34 on 19/03/2012
It must be a gene that has only appeared in the last few years, amazing ! what utter rubbish
21:10 on 19/03/2012
Another excuse for over-eating.

The obesity epidemic has been around only in the last 20 to 30 years. Why would a gene suddenly start to cause problems for more than a quarter of the population? If a gene is responsible, then we would expect obesity to be as common 50 years ago as it is today, wouldn't we?
12:37 on 20/03/2012
Because our food environment has also changed drastically, starting in about the 1950s, which is also when you see obesity begin to pick up as a trend. So has our pace of life- families have less time to eat, mothers are working (which is absolutely NOT a bad thing, but it does mean there's not one person dedicated full-time to making meals and taking care of the family). So we're surrounded by cheap, easy meals that are huge and incredibly calorie-dense, and also have less time in which to prepare and eat food. And you wonder why more people are obese today? When every street corner has a fast food restaurant with a drive through, and you can buy whole meals pre-made at the supermarket and loaded with tons of calories, sugar, salt, and fat?

The provocative causes you list, Louisa, make more sense than a simplistic blaming of a gene.
