The News of the World "jeopardised" a police inquiry into a spate of murders in Ipswich, a former senior police officer has alleged.

David Harrison, who worked on the inquiry into the killing of five prostitutes in Ipswich while at for the Serious Organised Crime Agency, told the Leveson inquiry into press ethics that the tabloid had hired ex-special forces soldiers to carry out their own surveillance on a suspect, which could have "seriously hindered" the police inquiry.

"I believe that by its actions NotW jeopardised the murder inquiry," the retired officer said in a witness statement.

Acording to Harrison the paper had their own team following the police's main suspect, who was later cleared of any involvement in the killings.

"If our surveillance had been weakened by having to try and avoid other surveillance teams looking for us, if we had lost the subject, he may have gone and committed further murders because we were dealing with something else," he told the inquiry into media standards.

In his witness statement he said the surveillance team employed by the News of the World were supposed to "identify any suspects we were working on, and to identify 'us' and our operating base."

The former officer said the Daily Mirror also had a surveillance team who interviewed the first suspect.

"Probe Was 'Jeopardised' "
Ah! Spring. When thoughts of culpability abrogation though inopportune Inquiry revelations, might also allegedly abound.

These batch of media were clearly out of control. Clearly incompetent leadership ?

Or a widespread culture, for decades, across Fleet street?

So both The Notw and The Sunday Mirror had surveillance teams in 2006 for this case. The Sunday Mirror team even picked the first suspect up and took him to a place where he could be "debriefed".
But as most of the headlines about this say, only Notw jeopardized the case. The Sunday Mirror actions (if they get mentioned) are put out in a just a line at the end of each article.
I'm not defending anyone here. But in this case, we have wrongdoing by 2 newspapers but only one is being scrutinized by the press. A little bit hypocritical I would say. All these people who say that they fight for a cleaner press in every article they write or in every interview they give must stop having double standards. The press problem is not just a problem of just one rogue reporter or one paper or one news organisation as some people want to present it and Operation Motorman showed this in 2003 (it's "funny" that NI's papers were not the biggest offenders).

mmgg - And if the police had felt that any press activity was interfering or jeopardising a police inquiry they could have gone to a Judge and sought an order halting any press interference - they didn't do so therefore one can conclude the police at the time did not think it a serious interference with their investigations - if he really had thought so Mr Harrison could have taken action at the time rather than complaining years after the event .

A lot of these people at Levenson simply want their 15 minutes of fame , they have in reality nothing to say but want a public platform to say it .

I'm not defending all the press actions but it is as you say it was not just one paper and in this instance it was action that could have been legally stopped dead in its tracks at the time

I totally agree with you and I can't stand the hypocrisy of a big part of the media and the police.

But likely this is not the only time they have done this. What of the times they were not detected and the fall out of those?

I don't think you are being constructive or correct in saying this is useless complaining.

I want to know what is REALLY going on, especially with the fourth estate.

Give us time to digest what has being going on under Murdoch. The scope of law-breaking has been so vast that if we do not focus on one area the information would be overwhelming and nothing would be accomplished nor ultimately change.

We'll get to the others in due time and in the meanwhile they can sweat waiting.

Unfortunately, i don't think the case would go any further than the Murdoch papers. Since July there were allegations about wrongdoing in many other papers but no-one bothered to do something about them. Some witnesses at Leveson even dropped names of other papers and journalists about wrongdoing and nothing happened (the reaction of the inquiry that investigates the standards and ethics of the press in general was.... let's go to the next irrelevant question). Editors from other papers went to Leveson and mentioned paying public officers for stories but only the Sun journalists are being questioned about it. Some of the MPs who are so vigorously fighting the wrongdoing in NI and in every opportunity they have are spreading allegations against NI said nothing so far about the alleged wronging in other papers, something that makes me think that they actually do no care about cleaning the press but only about getting the NI down (I may be wrong but that's the feeling i get).
And last but not least, some years after operation Motorman a list came out that showed that almost every paper in Fleet street was engaged in some wrongdoing (even the observer is higher in the list that the Sun for example) :

No-one did anything about it back then and I don't think that anything will be done now.

I wonder what Murdoch has been up to with that drone of his?
