Even as a conceptual artist installed a grass 'carpet' across the village of Jaujac in France to celebrate a nature programme, another natural wonder was caught on camera.

'Kimary' the newborn giraffe calf was photographed at a zoo in Gelsenkirchen, and amazed the people who came to see the new addition.

The Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC was a back drop to the annual cherry blossoms, but a memorial of a different kind was also ringed with flowers as fans laid tributes for Bolton Wanderers' Fabrice Muamba at Reebok Stadium.

The Duchess of Cambridge met Bethany Woods in a music class during a visit to The Treehouse in Ipswich, England, but in France tragedy struck after a gunman opened fire killing four people outside a Jewish school in Toulouse.

Elsewhere tens of thousands of Coptic Christians lined up outside a cathedral in Cairo to pay their final respects to the spiritual leader of their ancient church.

Meanwhile followers of Katy Perry hurried to catch a glimpse when she arrived at BBC Maida Vale Studios in London.
