Tonight's TV Pick: Hit The Road Jack & Rita Simons: My Daughter, Deafness and Me

TV Pick: Hit The Road Jack

Hit The Road Jack - Channel 4, 10pm

Comedian Jack Whitehall has finally hit the big time - well, he's got his own show.

In a series which finds him travelling around the UK, Whitehall moves in with local families to learn more about regional culture... and make a joke out of everything.

The 23-year-old comedian and Fresh Meat star, who made the leap from stand-up comedian to mainstream comedy TV after hosting the E4 show Big Brother's Big Mouth in 2008 and Celebrity Big Brother's Big Mouth in January 2009, recently told the Press Association he thinks viewers will soon tire of him.

"I know I do too much, I guess," he said.

"I'm very conscious of the fact that I'm due what people will call a backlash, some real vitriol.

"It will happen eventually, so I just need to make the best of it."

And the privately-educated comic, added: "People seem to find it a horrible thing, that I'm posh. And it's annoying, because there is nothing I can do about it."

Tonight, while people still seem to be quite fond of him, Whitehall heads to Cardiff, where he joins a male voice choir. He also gets a cameo role in Welsh soap Pobol y Cwm and tries to inspire a rugby team, before playing a stand-up set at a working men's club, supported by Gavin & Stacey star Ruth Jones and rapper Lethal Bizzle.

Rita Simons: My Daughter, Deafness and Me - BBC1, 10.40pm

EastEnders star Rita Simons, who plays brash Roxy in the soap, shows what she has to contend with off screen in this heartbreaking documentary.

Simons – the niece of Lord Sugar – has five-year-old twins, Maiya and Jaimee. Maiya was diagnosed with moderate deafness as a baby but now doctors believe she may lose her hearing entirely.

The documentary questions our attitutdes towards deaf people, as Simons is faced with the choice of embracing the deaf world, learning to sign and sending Maiya to a special school, or giving her hearing through the use of technology, implants and artificial sound.
