Budget 2012: Tobacco Duty Increase To Add 37p To Price Of Cigarettes

Cigarette Tax

Tobacco duty will rise 5% above inflation - adding a massive 37p on packets of cigarettes from 6pm this evening, the government announced today.

In his 2012 budget Chancellor George Osborne said smoking was the biggest cause of "premature death" in Britain:

"Turning to tobacco duty.

"Smoking remains the biggest cause of preventable illness and premature death in the UK," he told the House of Commons.

"There is clear evidence that increasing the cost of tobacco encourages smokers to quit and discourages young people from taking it up.

"So duty on all tobacco products will rise by 5 percent above inflation. That’s 37 pence on a packet of cigarettes. This will take effect at 6pm tonight."

However the Chancellor confirmed that one so-called 'sin tax', alcohol duty would not be changed - however the Treasury said rates will increase by 2% above RPI inflation, so prices will rise by 5% from next week.

"The government will shortly be publishing its Alcohol Strategy to address the growing problem of alcohol abuse, and the many billions of pounds it costs our NHS and criminal justice system.

"But today I have no further changes to make to the duty rates set out by my predecessor."

ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) chief executive Deborah Arnott said: "This is excellent news. Raising the price of tobacco through taxation is the most effective way of encouraging smokers who want to quit to make that first step.

"We are delighted that the Chancellor has listened to the voices of the health community and taken decisive action to tackle the greatest single cause of ill health and premature death.

"This tax rise will also put cigarettes out of the price range of many young people making it less likely that they will take up this lethal habit."

Obesity and diabetes cost the health service ten times more than the so called 'Smoking related' diseases.
Thousands of people die from cancer yet they have never smoked.
How about a five percent above inflation increase on chips, cake, pizzas, kebabs and sugar?
Hospitals continue to refuse treatment to 'Smokers' even for none smoking related illnesses; yet ignore the fact that they have probably paid a lifetime of inflated tax to fund that treatment.

I smoke and dont drink whatsoever, how many drink drivers kill innocent people compared to smokers ????????? A smoker knows the damage they cause to themselves, drinkers cause all sorts of problems, fighting, peeing on street corners and shop doorways, falling over drunk need ambulance when it could be used for real issues, drink driving, being sick on public footpaths and doorways, the list goes on so all you Non Smokers get a life !!!!!!!!!

Punitive 'sin tax' isn't a good solution unless what you want to achieve is making a lot of people very angry (and screwing a load of cash out of them in the process). Either have the courage of your convictions and ban these things outright, or tax them as any other luxury good.

Smoking isn't big or clever. I'm sick of people blocking up shop doors because they had to light up as soon as they got outside, thank you for your second hand smoke. If this stops cigarette junkies then good but I doubt it.

Big or clever it aint but it sure pulls in lots of lolly for the exchequer. Total for this year of duty and VAT is £11.2 BILLION. Cost to the NHS for treating smoking related diseases £5BILLION plus cost to employers for time lost versus non smokers £2BILLION. If you cnat do the math that is a nice little earner of £4.2 BILLION for the exchequer.
If the government were serious about a halt in smoking to protect the health of the nation either ban the product altogether or make it a prescription only drug. It is a proven fact that the majority of smokers come from the lower socio economic classes (we used to call them the working man) and in the parts of the country where smoking is most prevelant the black market of illegal unpurified tobacco is also the most prevelant with the bootleg cigarettes containing up to 1000% more carcogenic ingredients than "safer" legal types. This will add to the cost of treatment, cost to employeers and loss of revenue via avoided duty and VAT. The rise in the "booze and baccy" trips abroad are also increasing dramatically which benefits the coffers of the French, Spanish and Belgian economies at substantial cost to the UK.

Smokers are an easy target. Apply the same tax to drinking and you watch how fast the Coalition is chased out of power.
