A builder was left pinned to the ground for nearly four hours after accidentally firing a five-inch nail through his left hand.

Alan Williams had been doing some DIY in his home in Market Drayton, Shropshire, when he slipped at the top of the stairs and nailed himself to the ground.

The 46-year-old was unable to move or get help after the slip-up early on Saturday evening.

In fact it wasn't until his partner Suzanne Amos returned from work at 11pm that he was found - shivering and going into shock.

Staff nurse Suzanne dialled 999 for help and fire crews were called in to help lift the entire floorboard so Alan could be taken to hospital.

Alan was eventually taken to hospital in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, where doctors delivered the good news the nail had missed vital tendons and veins.

The nail was extracted during surgery and Alan is set to regain full use of his hand, although it is unclear whether he intends to resume his DIY project.

Alan told the Daily Mail: "I was pinned to the floor, I couldn't move, but actually there wasn't much blood and I wasn't in pain.

"After three hours though my leg was starting to go numb and I was very cold. I was grateful when Suzanne walked through the door."

Well at least it stopped him falling down the stairs. If he had perhaps he wouldn't have survived at all. So as the aul saying goes God works in mysterious ways.

well what can I say, really usefull reporting of a non story, while meanwhile, back at the ranch, french police have cornered a mass murderer, and other real tragedies unfold, we report on a 'chippy' nailing himself top a floor board. Hmmmm really important!!!!!!!

Those nail guns are very dangerous even in professional hands! It only takes a little longer using the good old Hammer.

I am a fencing contractor who on a good day may fire more than 5000 nails a day so using a hammer will take more than a little longer.

I have used nail guns as part of my job too, However I never trusted them after the safety device in the nose of the one my friend was using jammed and he shot one of those spiral nails into his thigh by accident. The surgeon had to go and get Mole Grips from his car and sterilise them before extracting the nail!

as a ex chippy we use to axes a lot back in he 1960 for trimming and scribing say skirting boards, aged 17 i was scribing some 4*2 to stud to fit a stone wall when the axe hit a hard knot, i lost control and the axe almost took my thumb off. the Chippy i was with took one look at the blood and thumb hanging on by a thread of skin passed out. So i had to walk a mile to village to get a phone for ambulance. Happy days?
