Game Goes Into Administration, 6,000 Jobs On The Line

Retailer Game has conceded defeat in its survival battle after failing to raise new funding, jeopardising some 6,000 jobs in the UK.

The group, which was reportedly battling to raise £180 million this week, said it intended to appoint administrators as rescue talks have not made sufficient progress.

Game, which operates 600 stores in the UK and 1,300 worldwide, intends to appoint administrators in the coming days but in the short term it will continue to trade as discussions with its banks and other potential funders continue.

This will fuel expectations that it will attempt a pre-pack administration deal involving the sale of some of its estate.

It is understood that one of Game's main lenders, taxpayer-backed Royal Bank of Scotland, objected to the terms of a rescue deal with private equity firm OpCapita, which recently bought electrical goods retailer Comet.

Game's shares were suspended on Wednesday after it admitted the business has no value.

One of the problems with company's like this is they are no longer on rock solid foundations when they become plc's. They provide profits for share holders only. They all look good on paper only untill you see their over drafts and borrowing. One slip in the market and they are dead in the water. It just goes to show how much we all depend on borrowing even though our government moans about it.

The Government should step in and support this failing company with taxpayers hard earned money, to protect the 6000 workers currently employed from redundancy.
To be honest I dont think they should, but should allow market forces to play itself out, but it does seem to be the sort of thing that our left wing socialist friends seem to expect today with their perceptions of the nanny state resolving every little difficulty
The answer is so simple . They just need to spend more money on purchasing more games so the company can make a profit with which to pay its workers.

Companies need to go back to being good old fashioned limited companies with no shareholders.
