Helen Worth says Coronation Street storyline twists will continue

Coronation Street star Helen Worth reckons there will be more twists and turns to come in the future for the soap.

The 61-year-old actress, who plays Gail McIntyre, praised producer Phil Collinson and his writing team for coming up with exciting storylines on the ITV soap.

"The remarkable thing about Phil Collinson and the writers is that they just keep coming up with more and more. I'm as amazed as anybody else," she said.

"I think, 'How are they going to do it and how are they going to get out of this one?' I am one of the last to know and then you think, 'Oh my God, that is so clever'. So as long as that continues the Street will go on."

Helen, who has portrayed Gail for over 37 years, defended the soap's more "grim" plots such as Carla Connor's rape and Frank Foster's murder.

"All you have to do is look at the viewing figures and viewers watch big episodes so they must be doing something right," she added.

The actress - whose idol is the late Doris Speed, who played Annie Walker - admitted the Coronation Street job is a dream come true.

"I used to watch it with my mum when I was a little girl. To walk into the green room in 1974 with all those greats... Nobody knows who they are now, which is OK. I don't mind that because the Street moves on," she said.
