Britain's Got Talent: Jonathan Antoine Wows Simon Cowell And Judges At First Audition (VIDEO)

Posted: 24/03/2012 21:48 Updated: 24/03/2012 22:57

I said in yesterday's Weekend TV preview that the moment Susan Boyle walked onto stage for her Britain's Got Talent audition, opened her mouth and blew away a nation's preconceptions was one of those magical television moments that it's impossible for the show to replicate, only one day match if it's lucky.

Well, 24 hours later, and it seems that day may have arrived - in the form of Jonathan Antoine, a shy 17-year-old who has suffered years of bullying in the school yard on account of his weight. At his side was Charlotte, his loyal friend who has made it her business to defend him whenever she can.

It was Charlotte who told the panel of Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and David Walliams how their singing teacher had suggested they come on the show. Jonathan seemed too shy to speak, and Cowell had one of those let's-just-get-through-this-quickly faces on - head down, chin on hand. He was even spotted whispering to Dixon, "just when you thought it couldn't get any worse"...

And then Jonathan and Charlotte started to sing.

The Prayer (originally a hit for Charlotte Church, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion and others) is nominally a duet, but let's make no mistake, it was Jonathan who captured the audience's imagination, belting out the song and becoming increasingly confident and powerful, with an operatically-trained tenor voice of richness and maturity that belied his teenage years.

It brought Cowell and Co to their feet. But it also brought a dilemma, as it was clear that Jonathan was a far more striking performer than Charlotte, something Cowell wasted no time in pointing out, telling Jonathan - "in my head, I'd say you should dump her."

Jonathan was having none of it, paying back the years of support at the school gate, standing his ground and saying "We started as a duo, we'll stay a duo." Which only brought more applause.

The judges unanimously voted 'the duo' through to the next round, which raises the thorny issue of how far 'the duo' can progress, or whether the producers will find some way of accommodating Charlotte's standard pop voice alongside Jonathan's astonishing sound.

Charlotte herself seems aware of this. When asked afterwards if this was a life-changing moment for them, Jonathan smiled and said "yes", while she looked at him with a sad smile and said, "yes, I think for you..."

Cowell was quite rude really. The two together were absolutely superb, and brought tears to my eyes. If they don't win, something is very wrong.

Marry her Jonathan, that's all I can tell you. The stupid TV show doesn't even matter, but she is the best thing you will ever find on this earth, don't let her slip through your fingers.

He is too unhealthy.
The strain and stress on his lungs, skeletal joints
blood pressure, blood sugar/insulin balance, etc
cannot be good for him.

This just might have been the moment that enables him to make changes, at 17 it's certainly not too late. I wish him the best, their performance was breathtaking. I'm still teared up.

Simon Cowell would hopefully get through to him.

What a voice Jonathan has!

It seems that Simon's remarks were half right. Not only will Charlotte hold Jonathan back, but Jonathan's voice will also always keep Charlotte's voice in the shadows as long as they are singing opera. She might be better off singing for herself too.

The hard part of that is, and who knows if its true, that she is what puts music in him.

susan boyle is beginning to get annoying singing that same song over and over again. Can she sing anything else?

Try buying a record or downloading some of her recordings.
Do you listen to a local radio station by any chance?

Almost close to the Susan Boyle moment Frosty....

I can't help but feel, the moment has been forced on us, (call it instinct). This seems like a marketing, reality media trick, to get us to formulate the thoughts that they want the public to have. Follow the breadcrumbs; therefore, not a Susan Boyle moment.

Jonathan Antoine is an exceptional singer, who should be judged in his own right; unfortunately, his look, and style of singing will forever be compared to Susan Boyle. Reality TV is as much about exploiting your assets, as it is about a competition of unique talent.

Let's see how this story of the reluctant hero, his loyal confidante unravels: £TVGold

Just read Ben Eltons "Chart Throb" It is a complete satirical expose of the reality talent show. It very accurately predicts the end game for these two!!!!!!: Simon Cowell's cynical and very deliberate "manipulation" of contestants and judges also, all in the name of TV ratings and MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish both of them well but I foresee no happy endings .

I hope that someone quickly steps in as this Jonathon's manager before Simon gets his greedy claws into the boy. I watched the audtion on the internet and was not only awed by their talent, but brought to tears by their loyalty and loving friendship.

Damn, I dearly love it when Simon Cowell gets his hat handed to him after dissing someone who's not physically attractive before they even have a chance to perform. Didn't he learn his lesson after Susan Boyle's audition?

Now that's talent!!! Someone on Youtube commented that Pavarotti was back on the planet. I agree. Jonathan was absolutely stunning. Chills-level stunning. With those pipes, he is definitely going places in the world of opera. And Charlotte is a doll with a really pretty voice. I hope she finds her niche too. I love their friendship and loyalty to each other. Very refreshing and sweet.

Simon earned $66 million off of Susan Boyle whilst she earned only $6 million.

He will get his way and separate the girl out of the equation to profit off of the lad.

Surely not a crime.
He would do all the hard work and spend all the money,
and hire all the staff and make all the promotional arrangements
and interviews. He deserves all the rewards for putting all that
faith where his money is.
Susan Boyle did not complain. She is very very rich.

When will people learn that it is a pre recorded and well edited programme. Cowell and his team research acts and invite many to appear. He certainly knew that this lad could sing well before the TV recording.
Comments that associate Simon Cowell with thinking / saying denigrating remarks about the duo are misguided to say the least. (He did the same thing with Susan Boyle and has fooled you all again)
I suppose you are amazed that all the Sunday papers carried a story about this even though the editorials had been completed before the appearance of this act.

100% correct. It amazes me that Cowell thinks Brits are as gullible / dumb as to believe how contrived that was..

Another star is discovered but he needs to remember LOYALTY to his friend.
She'll still be there long after the "show" has gone and all the money people have had a few quid. And she seems to genuinely be fond of him. Stick with her and forget the rest of them. If some pratt had told me to dump my friend when I was seventeen I would have smacked him in the mouth.
