Big Ben
The tower housing Big Ben could be renamed in honour of the Queen

David Cameron is backing a campaign for the tower housing Big Ben to be renamed in honour of the Queen.

Downing Street said the Prime Minister supported the move to call it the Elizabeth Tower in honour of her Diamond Jubilee.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Labour leader Ed Miliband and Mayor of London Boris Johnson are also backing the initiative, the Daily Mail reported.

Another 24 MPs have signed a Commons early day motion calling for the east tower at the Palace of Westminster to be formally named the Elizabeth Tower.

The motion was tabled by Conservative Tobias Ellwood and has the backing of MPs from the three main parties, including former foreign secretaries Jack Straw and Sir Malcolm Rifkind.

It urges the House of Commons Commission to consider re-designating the tower - currently called the Clock Tower - in recognition of "Her Majesty's 60 years of unbroken public service on behalf of her country".

Such a move would not be without precedent.

When the Palace of Westminster was rebuilt in 1860 the west tower, known as the King's Tower, was renamed the Victoria Tower to commemorate the long reign of Queen Victoria - the only other monarch to complete 60 years on the throne.

Big Liz?

Or will it be a tad near the knuckle as she would then have Big Ben on top of her?

Maybe she could exclaim, "every time you ring the earth moves for me!"

There are boats, buildings and any number of organisations named after the Queen, we don't need anything else named after her.

I suggest we rename Big Ben after a Labour M.P.......Maybe Tony BENN

For christ sake, big ben is big ben and so it will always be, does he really think peole will call it by another name. Ita an historical buliding, here long before the Queen , and will be for years to come. Leave it alone. What idiot thought of this? It would be interesting to find out !!!!!!!!!!

How much time does this coalition government have that it is not improving this country but can sit around thinking up s***e like this?
09:22 on 25/03/2012
While he is about it, why not rename "Traitors Gate" at the Tower of London as "Cameron's Gate?!
12:46 on 25/03/2012
He should be taken through Traitors Gate and we all know what happens after that. This load in at the moment as with the last lot just want to make themselves even richer even if that means reducing this countires ability to defend itself. No enemies 7/7 showed we had some and previously Irish Republican Army. A country always needs an army.

You can rename it whatever you want, but people allover the world will still know it as Big Ben and call it Big Ben so why waste time and money
10:10 on 25/03/2012
MPs love to waste our monet on things like this.I wonder how many people actually know the nme of the tower as it is always known as Big Ben
10:19 on 25/03/2012
Exactly....it will always be known as Big Ben whatever name they come up with but any change willno doubt involve an expensive quango and a small fortune in paperwork etc.

Whatever you call the tower it will always be known as BIG BEN despite that being only the bell. Everyone identifies the whole structure as Big Ben. If you take a taxi to Westminster you'll asked to be dropped by Big Ben. As for Cameron's support of a change - is that really relevant - anything to calmour for popularity he is after all a PR man [formerly known as Exploitations]

lets create something new for the queen's diamond jubilee.
I'm having an extension built. If the government pay for that I'll gladly let them name after the old girl. And I'll give DC a BJ as well for free.

Well this story obviously got all you professional grumpies going! The story is misleading because Big Ben is the name of the clock's bell - there are no plans to rename him. The tower is known by the dull name of East Tower, so why not rename it in honour of the Queen? Even if you're not a monarchist, you have to admit she's been a phenomenon and very rarely made any mistakes - unlike the countless prime ministers and presidents she has out-shone and seen off! It's a fitting tribute and in these cash-strapped times, a prudent economic one. At least they're not proposing to rename it the Labatt's East Tower or Barclaycard's Big Ben - yet!
10:21 on 25/03/2012
The point is the tower is KNOWN as Big Ben and long may it stay so. Maybe we should rename our prime minister for supporting which ever brown nose suggersted it.Maybe we should call hin The right honourable D**K HEAD.
11:38 on 25/03/2012
We know that, we are not stupid !!!! But nobody calls it by any 'tower ' name, its BIG BEN !!!
08:33 on 25/03/2012
What a pity they dont spend as much time trying to sort out the financial mess this country is in. I expect they will have to cut pensions and benefits to pay for the time and energy it has taken to debate this load of twaddle. How can we take this government seriously when this is what they spend thier time discussing. Mind you I expect the one that thought about it will get an hounor of some sort and expences for taking the trouble. I say leave it alone and stop wasting time and money on such stupid ideas.

Has anyone asked Her Majesty if it is something that SHE would like? Sometimes people presume to know what others wish. Being an American transplant Big Ben and the Queen are synonymous with England - imagine that others in the world are the same. I couldn't tell you what the name of the tower is now - I see a picture and it is ... Big Ben - i.e. "England swings like a pendulum do, Bobbies on bicycles, two by two, Westminster Abbey the tower of Big Ben ... The rosy red cheeks of the little children."
Laughs ... I rest my case!!!
Have a great Sunday!
